Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by glmce@hotmail.com »

Hello
I just replaced the AWD auto tranny on my '93 legacy with one from
a '90 Legacy. I replaced the rear diff as well at the same time since
the gearing between these model years is different. When I start the
engine the POWER light on the dash flashes 16 times before
extinguishing. I subsequently switched the control unit for the
tranny with the one from the '90 however the power light still
flashes.

Can anyone tell me what the flashing light means and whether it is
possible to decipher the problem causing the flashing?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Hi-the flashing power light means there`s a trouble code in the TCU. I`ve disconnected my electrical plug-in that softens up the shifts so I always get the light. Trans works fine, but light always flashes on start-up. Check in the BC-BF files for a diag sheet to determine what your code(s) may be. Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Dave-Face the front of your car-on the left side, just after the air box & mounted on the front of the strut tower, you should see a bracket with 2 bolts & an electrical plug-in. Simply unplug (I leave my plug in the housing, but not engaged so as to keep the female end clean from debris), & enjoy crisper shifts. It may take the ECU a little while to totally tighten up the shifts, but you`ll definitely notice a difference; plus, you`re increasing the life of the tranny by eliminating heat-producing overlap. BTW, my wife & I will be staying @ the Riviera from Thurs., 11/1 (arriving approx. noon) through Sun., 11/4, for the SEMA show. I don`t know the room # yet but you can leave a message as to where you`ll be for Rod & Joleen Grosvenor. I`ll contact you asap. My wife will be gambling & I plan to be in Subie heaven. Post back with any info you have & let me know how the tranny is working. See `ya---ROD (AZ.)----- Original Message -----

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Josh Colombo »

I've got to go to this thing some time. When does SEMA normally take place? In the fall, or is there different events? I'm goin to be in tx, after my time in memphis, I could handle the drive out to vegas to see some cool subies. :)

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Unplugging the connector will affect the TCU by eliminating the overlap between shifts. The computer makes the adjustment(s) by increasing line pressure in the tranny. You could say that this is a mechanical adjustment, but it`s more electronic. You will definitely feel firmer shifts & the car should be more responsive. I learned this from the same guy who did my turbo. Also recommended is a seperate trans cooler; it`ll extend the life of the trans & will allow your engine to run a bit cooler. Finally, get one of the Subie trans filters. The whole kit runs $10-15 depending on the dealership. Why so cheap? The cost is due to a recall on the early trannys, so Subaru keeps the cost way down. It`s not alot of fun to install both items in series, but spending a minimum of $2500.00 for a new tranny is less joyful! I`m glad I had my friend doing the work as I`d still be under the car figuring out how to route the hoses! Enjoy---ROD (AZ.)

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Josh-see my post to "ob1poor" as far as improvements. The connector is attatched to the front of the pass. side strut tower; the bracket has 2 bolts, an A/C line runs by it & the connector itself should be grey. Unplug but leave it in place to keep dirt out of the female end. If yoy need more info, post me back. ROD (AZ.)

Hey Rod, where is this electrical plug-in, that softens the shifts? Other then the softening part, does the tranny shift any better? Overall performance gains? feel etc?

thanks

Hi-the flashing power light means there`s a trouble code in the TCU. I`ve disconnected my electrical plug-in that softens up the shifts so I always get the light. Trans works fine, but light always flashes on start-up. Check in the BC-BF files for a diag sheet to determine what your code(s) may be. Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

Gary

Rod, I had meant next year, sorry. I'll be in memphis till about April/May or so. Then I'll be transfering down to Houston. I would love to go this year, but its a little far, don't have any time off, and I promised my cousin I'd be at his wedding that weekend.

So we'll shoot for next year. Have a great time, and take lot's of pics to scan for the rest of us :)

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by mike p. »

rod/josh - ok, here we go again, can't find my fwd fuse and now guess
what. can't find this and i'd hate to go randomly unplugging
stuff ;) but anyhow, what shape is the plug? only thing i can find
are a set of white round plugs but they don't seem to fit the
description, you wouldn't happen to have any pics of this would ya.
the only thing i have with two bolts(little probably 1/4" ones) is
some upside down black thing(like my technical terms?). man am i
missing some parts or just dumb?.??. oh btw if you go to legacy
central and look at matt's vaccum bypass and look real hard at the
bottom left corner of the first picture the thing with the pink/red
wires going to it, that's the thing i'm talking about. it has the
black/white lettered sticker on it and is mounted upside down.

this from the same guy who did my turbo. Also recommended is a
seperate trans cooler; it`ll extend the life of the trans & will
allow your engine to run a bit cooler. Finally, get one of the Subie
trans filters. The whole kit runs $10-15 depending on the dealership.
Why so cheap? The cost is due to a recall on the early trannys, so
Subaru keeps the cost way down. It`s not alot of fun to install both
items in series, but spending a minimum of $2500.00 for a new tranny
is less joyful! I`m glad I had my friend doing the work as I`d still
be under the car figuring out how to route the hoses! Enjoy---ROD

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Josh Colombo »

Hey Mike/Rod

I just did that little mod, damn, that's pretty freakin cool!!! It does make shifts crisper, especially if I downshift manually, some may not like the added jolt, I don't care. It didn't seem to affect shifts when at full throttle, at least between 1st and 2nd. I think that little box is some sort of logic thingy, depending on where throttle is, it determines if to make shift soft or not. My 2nd to 3rd shift is still kinda crappy, but I think that is just a worn tranny issue. Mike I took a pic of the connector, It's posted in the bc-bf legacy works pic section.

http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/BC ... vwp?.dir=/ <http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/BC ... %26.view=t> &.src=gr&.dnm=Trans+de-softener+connector.jpg&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/BC-BFLegacyWorks/lst%3f%26.dir=/%26.src=gr%26.view=t

If that link don't work, just go to the photo's section

Remember leave it just lightly sitting in there, so dirt doesn't get in. I put electrical tape around it to keep the connector secure so it doesn't fall out.

Thanks Rod for this little tip, should help gas mileage too :)

Legacy with flashing auto tranny power light

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Mike-the plug is grey & it`s on the FRONT of the pass strut tower. The FWD fuse/plug is on the REAR of the same tower. The one you want is very close to the MAF housing attatched to your air filter box. Try it, you`ll like it!!!---ROD (AZ.)

what. can't find this and i'd hate to go randomly unplugging
stuff ;) but anyhow, what shape is the plug? only thing i can find
are a set of white round plugs but they don't seem to fit the
description, you wouldn't happen to have any pics of this would ya.
the only thing i have with two bolts(little probably 1/4" ones) is
some upside down black thing(like my technical terms?). man am i
missing some parts or just dumb?.??. oh btw if you go to legacy
central and look at matt's vaccum bypass and look real hard at the
bottom left corner of the first picture the thing with the pink/red
wires going to it, that's the thing i'm talking about. it has the
black/white lettered sticker on it and is mounted upside down.

this from the same guy who did my turbo.

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Hello-it may take awhile before the `logic` portion of the TCU catches up but it WILL happen. The 3rd to 4th shift will not be as strong because you`re in FWD/4WD mode then. The 4-2 WD automatic set-up is softer due to the need to be flexible. Remember, when auto or manually shifting on the 4EAT tranny, 1st & 2nd are in a 50/50 AWD mode so you`ll feel the shifts more; that also applies to downshifting-you`re engaging both diffs equally at the same time. Enjoy the difference & give it about another 2-300 miles & the 3rd to 4th shift will tighten up. Happy motoring!!! (BTW, the connecters look different from year to year so the confusion is understood.)---ROD (AZ.)

Post by Josh Colombo »

Hey Rod,

Mine is only a FWD. So would that change anything? If I reset ecu, you think it would still take a little time for things to tighten up.

Thanks

the only thing i have with two bolts(little probably 1/4" ones) is
some upside down black thing(like my technical terms?). man am i
missing some parts or just dumb?.??. oh btw if you go to legacy
central and look at matt's vaccum bypass and look real hard at the
bottom left corner of the first picture the thing with the pink/red
wires going to it, that's the thing i'm talking about. it has the
black/white lettered sticker on it and is mounted upside down.

Why so cheap? The cost is due to a recall on the early trannys, so
Subaru keeps the cost way down. It`s not alot of fun to install both

Josh-I don`t know about FWD applications but an ECU reset could`nt hurt. Give it a go & see what happens. If the 3rd to 4th gear shift does`nt respond, I`d guess it`s normal wear & tear. Let me know how it goes, OK?---ROD (AZ.)

Hey Rod,

Mine is only a FWD. So would that change anything? If I reset ecu, you think it would still take a little time for things to tighten up.

Thanks
