Clocked Charcoal Canister= Bad MPG???

Hey there! My 93 legy turbo has had this engine light on forever! I get like 300km to the tank.... So ya. If you charcoal canister is clocked would this effect my gas mileage?? I have checked all the lines to and away from the can and i can find any blockage? So it must be the can i guess... i dunno. All i REALLY know is that i got the light checked out and it had to do with the emissions system in some way.

Can i just remove the charcoal canister?

Which code specifically? The check engine codes for the most part can only detect electrical faults. Most likely even if it is the charcoal cannister code the fault lies with the solenoid itself not working properly.

Also this shouldnt have any effect on gas mileage. Its only active on cold starts iirc.

Hmmm intresting. Well then. I dont know the code # , all i know is that its for the emissions system is some way. So my charcoal canister is probably fine then. What about the this Solenoid? Would it cause an engine light to come on? If its broken will it affect my MPG?

Its very easy to read the codes. Do that first before thinking to replace anything.

If the solenoid is broken it should not effect gas milage and it would make the check engine light come on if its an open circuit.

Cool. i guess. Well ill get that all checked out in the near future. But now im stuck with the MPG deal. Soo basically im stuck with the average MPG of around 15-18 Forever...

No. There are plenty of other things that can make the mileage lower that wont make a check engine light come on right away. For example the coolant temp sensor and the oxygen sensor are often responsible. That and a tune up

Srsly why havnt you checked the codes yet? It takes 45 seconds and you dont even need any tools!

DUDE! You can check you engine light code no tools! How? i have no scanner, but i do have a laptop.

As far as sensors go i got a new knock sensor, Coolent temp sensor and thats it for sensors. OOO and i got my engine resealed because of MASSIVE leaks!

Would a O2 senors trip the cpu if broken?

yeah i love having the OBD2 scanner in my truck, but the OBD1 stuff from this gen of Subies is great. No tools, just grab the code and figure it out.

I've got code 35 going in my '93 wagon right now. Only comes on when the engine is warm (that includes just sitting all day in the parking lot at work due to 90+ deg F heat ambient). SO this weekend hopefully i can clean the EGR and check out the solenoid.

either way still getting 25-27 mpg on each tank out of it, so I'm not complaining !

ok guys. I finally had time to check what code I was getting. Code 35
Canister purge solenoid valve! and that does what effect to my car is not working properly? The car runs totally fine, It just doesn't have great MPG. So How much for a Canister purge solenoid valve??

The canister purge solenoid allows for venting the hydrocarbon emissions to be burned by the engine.

A bad CPS may cause some fuel mileage issues. They go for around $70 I think.

Sweet! Thats just what i have been waiting for Legacy777. Im totally going to get that CPS in a jiffy! And the fact that is around $70 bucks is no problem seeing that i work at the local Subaru Dealer.
