Today I went about changing the transmission fluid on my 93' Touring Wagon. In the manual it states you need anywhere from 2.6-3.2 quarts to fill it back up though it holds 9.4quarts or so. Anyhow I had a 7.2quart container I was using to collect the fluid. When it finally stopped draining the thing was almost full indicating that alost 7 quarts of transmission fluid had come out. What I don't understand is why would it only take 3 or so quarts to fill up? I drove the car and checked the level after adding 3 in. I could see a drop about the full line however it didn't look like there was much fluid as when I had first checked it before changing hte fluid so I added another quart. Any ideas on whats going on?

Shift through all the gears slowly, then back to park. Leave the car running, and then check the fluid level.

Ok, yea I followed those instructions from the beginning Josh. They said it in the middle so I figured it would be a good idea to do so.. And yea I added more, went and drove around and checked it before I added the 4th quart.

Changing Auto Transmission Fluid
Kevin-Some info for you: normal fluid drain when just dropping the pan is approx. 4 qts.-drop the pan & remove/reinstall valve body is approx. 7 qts.-complete trans flush (should do every 30k miles) should get all 9+ qts. I just went to Red Line tranny fluid (partial for now) + added trans cooler & external filter. I ended up adding approx 41/2 qts. back. Hope this helps---ROD (AZ.)

Ok. well what I did was follow the instructions in teh car manual and remove the plug. This resulted in close to 7quarts coming out of the car. I will drive it and get it up to temp and check the fluid level again today. If its low I will go buy some more and add it.

Kevin-your description of `removing the plug` gave it away. My auto tranny has NO plug & the pan has to be removed to do a service. Being that I have an NA tranny the difference must be that you have a turbo tranny, right? We learn something every day (hopefully!)---ROD (AZ.)

Ok. well what I did was follow the instructions in teh car manual and remove the plug. This resulted in close to 7quarts coming out of the car. I will drive it and get it up to temp and check the fluid level again today. If its low I will go buy some more and add it.

Today I went about changing the transmission fluid on my 93' Touring Wagon. In the manual it states you need anywhere from 2.6-3.2 quarts to fill it back up though it holds 9.4quarts or so. Anyhow I had a 7.2quart container I was using to collect the fluid. When it finally stopped draining the thing was almost full indicating that alost 7 quarts of transmission fluid had come out. What I don't understand is why would it only take 3 or so quarts to fill up? I drove the car and checked the level after adding 3 in. I could see a drop about the full line however it didn't look like there was much fluid as when I had first checked it before changing hte fluid so I added another quart. Any ideas on whats going on?

Changing Auto Transmission Fluid
If he let it sit there for a long time, it would slowly leak out, however that's still quite a bit for not dropping the valve body, plus you got fluid in the torque converter.
Only thing I could think of is a return spring or something that is suppose to keep one of the valves closed is broken, and the fluid came out of the valve body. Don't quote me on that, but that's the only way I could see it happening.

I just went to Red Line tranny fluid (partial for now) + added trans cooler & external filter. I ended up adding approx 41/2 qts. back. Hope this helps---ROD (AZ.)

Today I went about changing the transmission fluid on my 93' Touring Wagon. In the manual it states you need anywhere from 2.6-3.2 quarts to fill it back up though it holds 9.4quarts or so. Anyhow I had a 7.2quart container I was using to collect the fluid. When it finally stopped draining the thing was almost full indicating that alost 7 quarts of transmission fluid had come out. What I don't understand is why would it only take 3 or so quarts to fill up? I drove the car and checked the level after adding 3 in. I could see a drop about the full line however it didn't look like there was much fluid as when I had first checked it before changing hte fluid so I added another quart. Any ideas on whats going on?
