I'm a new member of the group. I'm the moderator of another group
which is interested in putting 90-94 (and other) Subaru engines into
VW Vanagons. My own 4wd Vanagon Camper has a NA 2.2 in it which is a
big improvement over the odl VW engine but it weighs 5300lbs with all
my fishing gear in it so I'm always looking for more power. There
are now three members in our group with the 3.3L in these vans.

I was just reading some of the archives about head swaps and noting
that here seems to be quite a lot of interest in special pistons.

Check out this site which has a lot of interesting info on the 2.2T
engine from a very knowledgeable racer, tech, machinest, etc. who's
into auto racing engines of all kinds. He builds and sells special
ignition systems...... but he's also a pilot and he's building up a
special 2.2T engine for a homebuilt airplane.

His site has details on a complete teardown and rebuild of his own
2.2T.

For an airplane they want to run constant boost(but not as high as 18
psi) at relatively high rpm to run the plane at constant speed within
its maximum torque efficiency. He also has access to 100 octane av
gas so will be able to run higher compression than most of us might
want. But I though you would find his custom made forged pistons
interesting.

http://www.sdsefi.com/air11.html (general 2.2T info)
http://www.sdsefi.com/air17.html (disassembly - very informative)
http://www.sdsefi.com/air21.html (assembly w/ custom forged pistons)

Do you guys know about Leading Edge Performance in Temecula, CA.
These guys are Subaru tuners who build high performance Subaru
engines for sand cars. These guys are COMMITTED to high power
Subarus. They have their own dyno for testing engine mods.

They also modify engines for street cars. Mostly they've gone away
from the 2.2L for the 2.5 for sand cars which they build for 400-
500hp, but I've ridden in one of their cars with a turbo intercooled
2.2L with about 350hp. Scared the sh--- out of me.

www.leadingedgeperformance.com (site seems to be down today)

Cheers

Warren Chapman

Warren, welcome to the group. It's cool that people from other car groups
are swapping in our engines and coming here for some of the info.

BTW, Thanks for the website; that guy does a lot of good work. Maybe i'll
have him make me up one of those intake manifolds.. hehehe...

What about those pistons they look sweet. In the UK everyone uses Cosworth
pistons but the draw back is that they expand quite alot, which means fine
if you have a race car/and dont mind the piston slap and heavy oil use
