What's the max size (litres) engine that can fit in the US-spec
Legacies for our years (mine is a 93)? Somewhere, I thought I saw a
pic of a 1st-gen Legacy witn an SVX engine, but I'm not too sure.

Engine Size & Swaps
All the 4cyl engines will fit, from the 1.8 to the 2.5, without much
issue.
There's been talk in the Legacy forum at the i-club about 3.3l
swaps into the Legacy, but i can't recall ever actually seeing
proof it's been done. Theoretically it's possible, as the
transmission should bolt right up, and exhaust routing should be
pretty straightforward.
Other issues like the ECU would be important, as the 3.3l uses
more sensors to keep track of internal events than the fours.
Honestly, turbocharging a four is the easiest thing to do and
doesn't require any serious modification to engine electronics to
work well. Rod has a very fast 2.2 that's turbocharged right,
nothing spectacular, but definitely effective.

Yes but you can get crap loads more out of it. Plus the remember the
original question. Which was, What was the largest engine you could
put into a Legacy.

Gregg-I did some measurements on my `92 & came to realize the most feasible thing to do is stroke a 2.2 to 2.4 liter; the cost is reasonable, parts are available & there will actually be room for things like an intercooler, nitrous, etc. Would you like to work on an early Legacy with a 3.3 engine in it? Not me!!! Good luck---ROD (AZ.)

Engine Size & Swaps
Ian,
Have you ever put a V8 in a volkswagon beetle? Could you imagine what it
would be like driving one that had been modified that way? The front end
would be lightened considerably, even to the point of requiring
counterloading. The drivetrain would have to be beefed up and the mounts for
the engine would have to be completely re-designed, etc, etc, ad infinitum.
Now, with that said, I'm using an extream example here. A better example
would be putting a RX-7 rotory in a Miata... O.K. maybe not, but you get the
point. Putting a SVX engine would not be as insane as putting a v8 in a
beetle. However, the handling performance of the machine would change
considerably. It would dive through corners more because of the added weight
up front. All sorts of physical loads the chasis was designed for would be
weighted differently than what they were designed for. If you added any kind
of additional goodies to the engine bay, like an intercooler, you'd have to
get real handy with welding torch and fiberglass to accomodate. Batteries
and things would have to be put under seats or in trunks... Anything is
possible with enough time and $$. But why? Why not get 350 horses out of the
4 clylender and spend 3/4ths the cash, and have something in the end that is
weighted correctly? Or go buy an Audi...

I just worked on the Legacy that has the SVX motor in it and the owner
mentioned that he was thinking of selling it.

Well folks I have tried to work this out as well and the news is not good.
The disstance between the chasis rails is the same as the width of the
engine. Same bore an stroke as the 2.2l but it is physically wider than the
2.2. The 2.0l also shares the same stroke and it is a little wider than the
2.2l. It is also longer so you would have to move the gearbox back and that
will affect the angle of the CVs. It turned out that it was more trouble
than it was worth so ive gone for a later model 2.0l turbo instead.
The widths of the engines are:-
2.2l single over head cam 29"
2.0l double over head cam 31"
3.3l double over head cam 34"
I have a 2.2l non turbo front wheel drive in Australia and was contemplating
this task with 4wd but the 2.0l won on choice, even on price $3500 for a
3.3l front cut verses $2500 for a twin turbo front cut. I know what one will
be going in.

Well to be honest I wasn't considering the swap I have an EJ22t with a water
to air intercooler to support the extra boost.I was just wondering because
I'm sort of a "Tim the tool man taylor" when it comes to cars. I use to own
a Honda with a B16A transplant and man that was a fun car, but there was a
great lack of grip being a front wheel drive. I'm also about to put a H22
prelude engine into a 2000 honda accord coupe that we are going through for
turbo and NOS support. Its going to be a daily driver of my best friends
with roughfly 400hp @ 17psi. So I know all about the costs for turbocharging
and the benafits of engine swaps. The way I see it is that if subaru hasn't
done the swap in a racecar then there is probably a good reason for it.

to air intercooler to support the extra boost.I was just wondering because
I'm sort of a "Tim the tool man taylor" when it comes to cars.
