90 Legacy, no fan, no lights on unit

Post by zachman1995 »

Recently bought a 90 Legacy with no fan. Lights for the unit do not work also. Trying to troubleshoot at home before I bite the bullet and visit the dealership. Fuses are ok as well as the other dash lights. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
College student

Welcome to the forum.

Can you provide some more details. What exactly do you mean "lights for the unit"? Which fan are you talking about? The HVAC fan?

No fan

Sorry for the confusion, This car has a main fan toggle switch 1-4 for fan control to the HVAC. Working it has no effect. Each of the bottons (defrost,AC, heater...) seem to have a small square on them for accessory lights. Those do not seem to work also.

I'd suspect the wiring to the HVAC unit may be bad or the HVAC unit itself may be bad. Without doing some testing, it'd be difficult to say for sure.

Have you checked all your fuses?

Sounds expensive. I priced a heater control unit at the dealer for almost $300.00.

I did check the fuses and made sure they have 12volts DC to them.

I wouldn't buy anything new....not even sure you could. I'd try and pick up a used unit from a board member or local junk yard.

I'd suggest trying to test the fan motor directly and see if it works. If it does, then yeah I'd try and find a used HVAC unit to swap in.

Thanks, I will do that. Although, now I am thinking loose connection. I just banged the dashboard in frustration and the fan started to work. Go figure!

when i got my 1990 my controller did not work. i was looking in the engine bay later and noticed a plug unconnected. so i plug it in. when i did the controller worked. the ac went on for a few miniutes before it turned off. laster i found out that the conroller was just over used and the buttons were worn out. so i went to a junk yard where i found a 92 and pulled that controller out. then i found out that the new plug on the controller was different from the old one. so i had to look at the haynes manual and do some cutting and splicing. got it togther and put it in and pushed a button.... and... it worked. the controller was old and worn out. so like Legacy777 said go to a junk yard like i did and pull you one out. hope this helps
