I've known for a while now that my speedometer is 5mph off, but
yesterday, on a 500-mile highway drive, it really acted up. Once when I
was accelerating, it got stuck at 75 and stayed there for a bit, then
all at once it jumped up to 90! Then when I was slowing down, it did
the same thing, got stuck at 75 then suddenly jumped down to 55. In
both cases, I was using the cruise control to change my speed (you know
push it up for faster, down to coast). I don't think it's a coincidence
that it gets stuck at 75 and not some other number, although... I never
drive that slow. Is this somehow related to the cruise control? Does
nayone know of a good place to find out how a cruise control works (is
it electronic, how does it measure speed, etc)? How easy is it to
replace my speedometer or at least the cable? (It also makes a rotating
sound sometimes at low speeds)
TIA Guys,
Dan

Wierd speedometer maybe cruise control?
You could possibly have a failing speed sensor. I would drive it normally without cruise, if you don't see any reoccurances. Then try cruise again, if you notice it only with cruise, most likely something with cruise electronics, however to what it might be, I really have no idea. The cruise is electronic I believe. The fact that your speedo is off 5 mph shouldn't really have anything to do with it. I really don't know if there is any way to adjust the speedo, either electronically or mechanically. I would be interested in knowing as my rims and tires are slightly smaller then the stock tire size so my speedo reads a hair slower then I'm actually going. So technically I've gone further then what my odometer says. You really become aware of it on long trips when your mileage is a 100 miles or so off from someone elses.

I really don't think it is your speed control because the speed
control has several backups and fault prevention circuits in it and
they are almost 100% trouble free. You mentioned the cable noise and
what is probably happening is that the cable is kinked or worn and it
will bind inside its cover. When it does this the cable will stop
momentarily and then break loose and spring foward with a faster than
true speed. The cable type speedometers have a internal sensor that
converts the rotation into a digital signal for the use of the cruise
and a few other things and is getting "confused" bit of high speed
signal. The cruise itself will not respond right away to this signal
because of the protection circuits it has. Replacing the cable should
cure the problem.
