A little superscrew story

Post by lukan.sean@optimaepc.com »

On another note... I tried to get into the dog walk area with the car
last night. I wanted to tow the GT snowracer around for some start of
the winter amusement. Well... I entered thru the back of RoadKing
thru some guys back yard I think. I had to go down a pretty steep
hill that had very little room at the bottom to manoever. Once down
I decided I would try to get back up before proceeding any further.
Much to my dismay I could only make it slightly past the half-way
marker. No problem I thought. I'll just drive it up on the tracks and
find another way out. Its a bit of an off camber ditch with a sharp
turn to get on the tracks so down we go trying not to drag anything
and still have enough room to get both left tires on the tracks. (By
the way... I inspected the tracks first to see if they had been
used recently, 3-4 inches of snow with no tracks showing for as far
as we could see so of course I gave it the thumbs up as safe to
proceed). And off we go. Slightly riding the brakes in 1st gear I
make it down the ditch and up and over the tracks with my left front
wheel but because I have to turn I am unable to get the left rear
over the track and now I'm stuck. The car will move a little
in each direction but seems to get hung up when going between the
ties. Shit. Now not only am I stuck somewhere I'm not supposed to be
but I'm also stuck on the tracks. Not a big deal, I rock the car a
couple times and get it moving with the left front providing my
steering and the other 3 wheels kind of doing a little sideways
shuffle. I manage to get it to an open point in the tracks where
I can get out into open field (just happens to be at the bottom of
the hill at the back of the walking area where the construction was
recently finished). Cool. I'm no longer stuck on the tracks, just
stuck in this big compound. I take a run at the hill and make it up
to the top with little hesitation. Seeing that I can now manoever
freely on dirt roads we decide to hook up the GT and have some fun.
While tying the rope to the car I notice a train coming towards us
at about 10mph on the tracks I had been stuck on not 5 minutes
before. Holy shit I guess I have to reassess my ability to judge
whether or not tracks are being used. I check my pants for soilage
and with a lack thereof we make a couple of runs back and forth all
the way to the big rock and back so the dogs get their exercise and
we have some fun at the same time. I decide to check the back side
of the park for exits close to Road King since I know there is a big
ass chain and lock on the gate where we normally enter. Its a short
trip down to the gate near RoadKing and a quick glance to determine
that it is locked as well (I didn't expect any different so I wasn't
too upset when we got there). So I decide to look in the trunk for my
lug wrench. I figure I can just put it in the loop of the lock and
pry it open. No luck finding the wrench not to mention yet another
train passes on the "unused tracks" while we are sitting there. Rob
just happens to have his cell phone so I call Darlene and tell her to
bring us the bolt cutters. 10 minutes later we meet her at the other
gate (by the golf course) and she hands me the bolt cutters then
boogies out of there so as to not be associated with "us criminals".
Having already made several bad judgement calls on the night I decide
to try and cut the big huge Master lock. To my amazement I bent the
bolt cutters and damage them so now they only close to where the jaws
are about 1/8" apart. Darlene is gone and I feel like I'm stuck
again. In a last ditch effort I decide to try and cut the smaller
Master lock. Bang... first try it pops open. We're free at last! Rob
and I hop in the car and boot out of the park. Run back and loop the
chain thru the gates so it looks like its shut and then hightail it
outta there. I'm sure that most 4x4's would have had a hard time
making it back up the first hill I got stuck on. 360,000km on the
superscrew and I'm still beatin the hell out of it. Thats my story.
