Auto to Manual conversion

Post by radioactiveman_2 »

Hi everyone,

Just curious if anyone here has changed their auto for a manual
gearbox in a '92 Liberty/Legacy Turbo? If so, are there any trouble
spots or is it worth the trouble at all?

Thanks

You need:

Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder, Clutch hoses, Hydraulic clutch
pedal and Brake Pedal. ECU. Flywheel, pressure plate and clutch
plate. A turbo gearbox with gear stick and the gearbox cross member.

Note: The Turbo gearbox and N/A gearboxes are slightly different on
the bell housing to allow for the different clutch these are Cable or
Hydraulic. Everything else on the gearbox is indentical.

I mentioned the Hydraulic type because your car in turbo and they a
more heavy duty than the N/A cable equivalent.

You should not have to replace the ECU on US spec cars. There is a
wire that has to be cut at the ECU. It is labled AT/MT Identification
and is pin B48 #20 for the ECU.

Really??

That's it? That's pretty damn cool. Doesn't the ECU get signals from the auto tranny that it won't get from the manual? Or is that what this wire does. Just tells the computer, ok don't look for this auto shit any more?

That's a very good bit of info.

Thanks Al

Lol I knew that you didn't need a new ecu but didn't know anything about the wires. Now only if I had $$$ to go about. I've been saying that for a while :(. Good luck to guys with your projects. I hope they work well. Will look forward to seeing how they turn out.

Thanks for that info. I thought there was more to it than that. I
will have to dig now for the EJ20 wiring to see if it is the same.

Thankyou all who answered. Does anyone know if the wire cutting trick
on US spec cars is the same for Jap spec cars?

Dave,

I'm assuming you're goin to do a write-up of this for legacy central. I'm
real curious how everything went, any problems you had, etc.

Hey Legacycentral Dave

Did I ask what plans you have for the torque converter?
