replacing the oil pan question
Does anyone have a different way than lifting the engine to replace the oil pan on a 92 Legacy non turbo?

Dropping the crossmember. All you need to do is lift the engine, you don't need to disconnect everything.

you *can* do it on an N/A motor without lifting it or removing the crossmember, but it is difficult. those 4 bolts on the aft end of the pan are a major PITA. but i can be done, luckily mine were so oily that the bolts were not stuck in there too hard, so I could get them out. Jockeying them around to get the pan back in is a little tricky too.

unless it is rusted through or the pan sealing surface is really rusty and warped/uneven, you shouldnt have to replace the pan itself. it is a pretty solid piece of stamped steel. but, who knows, you are surely in the rust belt...
if you do decide to use the same pan, be sure to give each little fastener hole a small hit with a round ball peen to ensure that the surface is more even right at the hole. a lot of times the bolts are tightened and the pan can distort a little bit which causes leaks over time with vibration and shock. anyways, just a little tidbit
and OBTW - lifting the engine from the diff/tranny is very easy just a little bit to give you access. the eng mounts wont come out all the way

Yeah I had to take a hammer to my oil pan on my metro pretty good to get it all straightened out. That thick cork gasket and overtightening the bolts on it cause it to deform and not make the greatest seal.
