Throwing $5000 more at a Legacy Turbo...

Post by rd2711 »

Okay, you may have seen a post or two about my impending Legacy Turbo
Purchase. If you haven't, here's the scoop. In March '02 I will be
purchasing someone's used Legacy Turbo Sedan -- exactly which one, I
don't know yet. Currently there are three with Manual transmissions
available in the US (that I've found at least). This car will both be
my daily driver, plus a street and dirt-road rally car (Monte Carlo
dirt rallies), for the next year or so, or whenever I decide to prep
it for Full-on Club Rally (I have to give a couple years to my wife
to get used to the idea) and get another daily driver.

Aside from what I've budgeted for normal wear and tear repair of a
ten-year-old used car, I intend to spend an additional $5000 on
performance modifications up front.

It's first major "active duty" (aside from an occasional TSD) will be
to bring me back alive from the Alcan 5000 Summer rally. So it has to
be completely prepped by August and I'll have a shop do most of the
stuff.

My upgrade goal is to increase cornerning, braking and acceleration
performance on a balanced level. I'll probably drop in some Sparco
Seats as well.

Right now i'm considering an Apex'i turbo controller, coil-over
suspension (who's? -- should I go STI rally? or are those rediculous
for the street?), larger brakes (suggestions?) and, oh..I think that
about runs out of money for this phase...hmmm...

Anyhow, I'd like to toss this open for suggestions. I'll be
performing additional modifications after the Alcan, so I'm more
interested in doing it "right" the first time. So, if going with STI
rally suspension is the best, but takes most of this initial budget,
I'd sacrafice something else for later.

How is that Apex'i controller? Will I need anything else installed to
get to 11-13psi? Or does it come with something to replace/bypass the
BOV?

Thanks for anyone's time on this, I'll be more than happy to post
pics and dyno results (though the only AWD dyno is about an hour away
last I checked) as I add more modifications.

Uh, While I'm not familiar with the Apex-i per se, any application
involving boosted psi will typically require a change to the
wastegate management not the BOV. S[ecifically, you will need to
defeat the EMU opening the wastegate at 8.7 psi. Certainly another
thing you will have to consider when boosting to 11-13 psi is pre-
igniting your engine into self-destruction--to prevent that, you need
intercooling.

Throwing $5000 more at a Legacy Turbo...

Post by Josh Colombo »

I think some of the guys on here are runnin the Apex'i turbo controller, or something like it, and really like it.

suspension....I think Mark Ward is runnin a set of TEIN coil-overs, Dave has ground control or something like that I think. I believe both of those are pretty good....not sure on pricing or which one would be better suited for your application...of course if you wanted to drop a lot DMS's are very good (not sure if they will fit these cars....)

Larger brakes.....I personally see two viable options....the one is rather expensive. First option would be to upgraded rotors and calipers to the new WRX rotor/caliper. You will need 16" wheels to clear these calipers I believe. Other option is to go to a full 4-pot setup.....however it's ridiculous how much money it cost. Sti has one....I think brembro has one. I personally will most likely be goin with the WRX option. I just need to confirm that the larger brakes will fit my 16" wheels....since they are not standard subie wheels. Other thing I would recommend is getting stainless steel braided brake lines. I would also recommend a larger rear anti-sway bar....maybe bump up to a 20mm rear adjustable bar. I believe the turbo legacy has an 18mm bar....which is what I snagged and stock on my 90 N/A legacy....I think mine stock was either 14 or 15mm. The balance of the car was dramatically improved.....I'm not sure how the turbo legacy's balance and handling is.....but I think with a good adjustable set of coil-overs and adjustable rear anti-sway bar.....you should be able to dial in the suspension to be very competitive in the turbo legacy.

Like you said....that's probably goin to run you out of money......or close to it. There are probably a couple more little things you could do if you had money....but those are the things i would do to achieve good results if I were runnin the car in rallies.

Throwing $5000 more at a Legacy Turbo...

Post by Grant Hughes »

I'm not sure where you are located but in Denver I
know of at least three for sale. Two are automatic
and I am guessing if you want to run rally you'll want
a 5 speed. The only possible five speed I now of in
Denver is $5,000, 136K, 1993 Sedan. If you want to
contct the seller their number is 303-324-4483. I
work at a Subaru dealership in Denver though and we
are part of the largest car dealership corporations,
called Autonation. We have like 17,000 dealerships
nationwide and if you tell me where you live, and how
far you'r willing to travel I can try and see if there
are any vehicles in Autonation close to you. Either
email me back or call me at 303-792-0330 (work).
Sounds like a good plan with the modifications you're
planning. I am aiming to do something along that same
line here in the next two years. Right now I am
slowly modifying my 92 Legacy sedan FWD to run in
local Rally cross events. So far all I have done is a
KN filter but I am considering putting a turbo on it
as well as lightweight crank pulley and less
restrictive muffler. Good luck with the car search.

Throwing $5000 more at a Legacy Turbo...

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

I just installed a Hallman manual boost controller & have it set to 12 psi until my replacement alcohol sprayer nozzle comes in; it`s reasonable and works quite well. I have a Bosch blow-off valve that will never be bypassed; why are thinking of living with compressor surge??? Is there something I`m missing here? Let me know---ROD (AZ.)

Throwing $5000 more at a Legacy Turbo...

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

I`m saving for a top-mount intercooler now, but have eliminated pre-ignition completely with an alcohol injector. Once the timing is backed of a couple of degrees, the new sprayer installed and the final adjustments are made to the alcohol delivery, I`ll be running 15 psi plus with no intercooling! Mind you, this is on a former NA motor with 9.5-1 compression and 172k miles. The intercooler will just be icing on the cake (I hate cake w/o icing so it`ll happen fairly quickly.) You could boost easily to 20 psi or more with the same combo and your 8.0-1 compression. Just a thought........ROD (AGAIN)
