Got this from www.carpoint.com This applies to 90-94 Legacy.

"A common problem on this vehicle is failure of the Canister Purge
Control Solenoid, and an occasional problem is failure of the
Hydraulic Lash Adjusters. The cost to repair the Canister Purge
Control Solenoid is estimated at $96.53 for parts and $26.00 for
labor. The cost to repair the Hydraulic Lash Adjusters is estimated at
$58.50 for one bank or $97.50 for both banks for labor. All prices are
estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include
diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax."

So, what is a Canister Purge Control Solenoid and Hydraulic Lash
Adjuster?

A canister purge solenoid works in conjunction with the cabon canister thing. It's next to the radiator on the passenger side. What it basically does is trap or get rid of excess fuel vapors in the gas tank or engine or something like that. The carbon filter or something sucks the vapors in....and at a certain time or what not, the solenoid will open up and let them out into the engine to be burned.

Hydraulic lash adjusters is just a fancy name for hydraulic lifter. What they do is connect the rocker arm to the valve to open it. Solid lifters are just a hunk of metal, and you have to adjust clearences.....or else you get that tapping noise. Hydraulic ones are self adjusting, and use oil pressure to to keep them firm. When then get old they don't keep pressure and valves start tapping.

One way to permantly cure the purge solenoid problem is to go to a
parts yard with very old Subies. In the '70s and early '80s they had a
metal jacketed solenoid that is configured just like the one with a
problem just clean it up and wire it in. I have never seen a failed
solenoid of the early version and have seen hundereds of the new type
fail.
