Alright, i'll clarify. A good driver driving a slower car will do much
better then a crappy driver in a mega-HP car, to a resonable extent. ;)

Again I say, an average driver versus an average driver *in identical cars,
but one has a better suspension*. The one with the better suspension will
win. This is true for ALL forms of automobile racing.

You are correct in saying that the engine in the Impreza 22B is based off a
2.2L engine. You're also correct in saying that if you start with a better
car, you'll end up with a better car. Subaru thought of this as well, that's
why they started with the 2L engine and bored it out to 2.2L. Start with a
better engine, end up with a better engine.

Jason......you're not quite right about the boring out thing. If you read the SAE tech article in the files section. For the conception of the Legacy. There were two engines developed. The 2.2 liter N/A engine, and 2.0 liter turbo engine. The engine was not just bored out on the 2.2 If you read some of the fine print, it says the 2.2 liter is open deck design. The 2.0 liter engine is closed deck. I know the 2.0 liter eventually went to open block as well.

But the two engines were designed for different applications.

We aren't talking about the Legacy, we were talking about the Impreza 22B.
The article located at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BC-BFLega ... _boxer.pdf
was published in 1989; a little outdated as far as the Impreza 22B is
concerned.

The 22B is based from the 2L WRC engine.

I really don't think subaru has changed a whole lot in the basic layout of their engine. From what I have heard the 22B engine is an EJ22T block, which again to my knowledge was designed separately.....unless it was just a 2.0 liter bored out.....but that.....i really don't know.

what makes the better engine?

I have done the research. The 22b is an EJ20 closed deck block with more stroke. Mathematically, a nut ball design, but it seems to work. The 22b IS NOT based on the EJ22 SOHC which came in the american destined legacy turbos. Those engines are very different.
