Some A/C questions.....

Post by Josh Colombo »

Ok I got some A/C questions and what not.

For those that don't know. I have a 90 Legacy N/A. I really haven't done much to engine yet. One thing I do have is an underdrive pulley.

Ok now for my questions. First one is my A/C is stinking....well not really the A/C itself, but when I use the A/C and then switch back to normal vents I get a nasty mildew odor. I have posted on another board as well. They have mentioned mold collecting in the evaporator box, and some solutions as to a spray you spray in the air intake to clean it out, or to use Lysol disinfectant spray.

Anyone take the evaporator box apart? How hard is it to get apart. I am pretty confident that the drain for the box is working. It still may need to be cleaned out some though. Anyone have this particular problem, and a specific resolution?

Second question/problem. My A/C pump is making a rattling when the engine is at idle. It sounds almost like a faint rod knocking on an engine. It's not really loud, but is audible from outside the car, and faintly audible from inside the car.

The noise goes away if I rev the engine a little. Also if I have been driving for a while, then come to a stop, it will not make the noise right a way. It may take a couple seconds before you can hear the noise.

My car has mainly been in the Northern part of the US where you would use the A/C occasionally. I have since then moved down to Houston, so I must have my A/C working, and working properly. The A/C was not run religiously on a monthly basis to keep the pump lubricated and what not.

The A/C still however produces rather cold air. When it's really hot, it does take a little while to get it kickin cold air out.

Soo....now for some of the questions. Seeing that my car is 12 years old, and has 154,000 miles on it. Would an A/C recharge be advisable? I will NOT convert over to 134a refrigerant. I'll get my grubby mits on some R12.

Do you think the A/C pump noise is being caused by lack of pressure in the system, and recharging it will boost the pressure back up and keep things cosure? Or do you think the fact I have an underdrive pulley on has any major ill effects. I have some of the calcs for speed differences between stock crank size pulley and the under drive one. It is very minimal. Something of the means of 200-300 RPM difference. I really don't know if that is enough to cause havoc or not.

If I get the A/C recharged, and the pump still makes the noise I will most likely just live with it till it dies. I'm not goin to drop a couple hundred dollars if it still works.

Thanks in advance for any help/comments.

Josh

PS: BTW, here is my site addy for some of the new folks or those that don't have it. www.surrealmirage.com/subaru I have more detailed info on stuff I have on my car as well as the ECU & TCU codes and retreival procedure, and some other stuff too.

Some A/C questions.....

Post by milehial2000 »

The one I have is a Zezex it looks close but they all do and every
compressor that they used needed a different mount. I went through
this on almost every conversion we did. Your compressor doesn't sound
good as most noises of this type get louder and louder but who knows?
The Calsonic is one of the more common ones.

Some A/C questions.....

Post by Josh Colombo »

yeah......I think I'm goin to just drive it......maybe have someone just
look at it......If I can get a compressor cheap....then maybe I'll
change it......if not....I'll wait till it breaks.......have any of you
guys done the R12 to 134a conversion......I want to make sure I get cold
A/C......but I've heard in general....the 134 systems are
beefier...because the refrigerant isn't as good......any thoughts??

Thanks

Josh

The one I have is a Zezex it looks close but they all do and every
compressor that they used needed a different mount. I went through
this on almost every conversion we did. Your compressor doesn't sound
good as most noises of this type get louder and louder but who knows?
The Calsonic is one of the more common ones.

Some A/C questions.....

Post by milehial2000 »

I don't think they are much better they just have a different oil,
expansion valve and 134. I went with it when I put my Lagacy turbo
motor in the Impreza and I can't tell the difference.
