I think most people, that is to say what I'm about to state does not apply to everyone, but most people get their tickets in residential areas. To this day, I have yet to have attracted the attention of a cop on the highway. I have had 6 tickets over the course of my driving career, and every single one I picked up because I was violating a traffic law or a speed law in a residential setting (read: non-highway). Since I have changed my focus toward being an exacting, cautious, prudent and law obiding driver on surface streets and byways - no tickets, no accidents in 4 years (since I was 23 years old - that may have factored into the equation as well. My age... who knows).
I'm still a little concerned when I speed - it taps on my conscience from time to time. I have a mechanically flawless vehicle - so I'm not worried about anything blowing up on my car at 120mph. When I pass people at speed, I always flash my beems. Once when I'm a fair distance away, and again I flash them just before I hit the zone where I can still hit the breaks or manuver. I DO worry about the other guy quite a bit.
<get ready for the longest sentence in the world>
All it takes is for me to get the car cooking up to 95mph on my way to tripple digits and for some monkey-spank in a Buick Skylark going 45 mph, whom is completely oblivious of the fact his car comes equipped with a rearview mirror and a turn signal, to decide that the pavement looks better in the other lane for no apparent reason, and swerve into my lane at the precise moment when I hit the zone where physics dictate that there is absolutely no freaking way I could possibly do anything to avoid him. That scenario concerns me quite a bit every time I do it. Whenever I pass someone in a situation where vehicular contact means certain death, I consciously ask myself if that will be the last time I ever do anything like that on the public roadway ever again.
So there's my formula for ticket free driving. So far, so good. As far as risking life and limb, it is a problem I will continue to wrestle with for the time being. I have a feeling the time is near when I will abandon such practices... It simply is not worth it - but it is a helluva lot of fun damnit! I feel like a confessional crack addict... I need a hug.
Best,
Sambo

White wagon, no roof rack, and usually surpassing the speed limit.
