why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by ob1poor »

ok, i got to thinking the other night there(yeah i know,
dangerous) and well i was wondering... what makes the wrx so
special that it has 200+ hp but the engine is only 2 liters compared
to our legacy turbo ej22t engines that are .2 more liters but lack in
hp by a good 30+ hp. is it just the intercooler on the wrx and a
jump in boost pressure or what? from what i gather the ej22t engine
is a beefy little bugger so why the big difference in hp? is it just
detuned that much? if so how does one go about tuning it up to it's
peak performance? sorry for the dumb question but i just don't quit
understand. thanks for any help....

14PSI vs 9PSI.

TDO4 vs RB52 (Size does matter)

Intercooler vs no intercooler.

I keep hearing people say this and it kinda is a little irritating so
please excuse me while I blow off some steam:

SUBARU DOES NOT "DETUNE" THE ENGINE OR COMPUTER! Why do people insist
on believing that a company would sell cars that were not tuned
properly? That's ridiculous! I know, you probably think they do it to
create a market for tuning shops and aftermarket upgrades, but that's
bullshit! Most company decisions in any business are driven by profit
projections, and they don't profit from that stuff.

Now... the truth:
Subaru and most other car manufacturers do not tune their engines for
peak performance. There is a damn good reason for that: the average
consumer is totally uninterested in peak performance. They are
interested in gas mileage, comfort, and reliability. In order to
fulfill those needs, Subaru tunes the engine to get the best balance
between gas mileage and performance. If they tuned the engine with
only performance in mind, the mileage AND reliability would suffer,
and the engine gets louder. The average consumer does not like any of
that, especially the noise. The folks who want peak performance
probably constitute 5-10% of Subaru's customers, if that. It would be
stupid for Subaru to cater to those people instead of the 90% who are
interested in reliability and mileage. Subaru is known for
reliability as well as their excellent AWD system. There is a good
reason for that... and it's because they have struck an excellent
balance between performance and the other factors.

I say "detuned" all the time. Its essentially true. American buyers
are known to like softer cars. While its true the cars run great in
both cases (JDM USDM) the ones from Japan have to deal with less
resrictions from the government. In the case of the legacy. The
essentially wanted to get a better model legacy over here, but didnt
want the cost to be too high. This is why we lack the intercoolers
and higher boost levels. They stuck with a 2.2L design because it
was common over here. There were no parts for the 2.0L back then
available here in the states. Its not detuning persay, but better
balancing cost/performance/comfort for the US market. Pretty much we
Americans just need to toughen our image as car buyers, and we'll
start getting real cars over here.

Wrong. Here in OZ we get 160KW from a WRX and in Japan they get the 185KW
version. Look at the Forester, even worse at 130KW vs 185KW. Same engines
different computers(and other things like boost and exhaust. Yep Exhaust.
When the STI Impreza made it to OZ it got a different cat (power was still
claimed to be the same but on the dyno they were wrong), Yes maybe the WRX
is tuned for our fuel but certainly not the Forester.

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by Brian White »

I would have to add the fact that we, as Americans,
only get ~91 octane fuel out of the pump. Therefore
the engines that we get over here are significantly
detuned to deal with a lower grade fuel. In
California, we used to be able to get 92 as supreme.
Now it's all 91, along with Colorado, which is where I
spent the last five years. So I would have to say we
definitely get 'detuned' motors over here.

hmmm....that's weird.....wonder why they've crapped down the octane ratings in certain places. I can get 92 here in Houston anywhere......I'm sure I can find 93 somewhere....and I know some places in the north east even had 94.

Wonder what gives.....

DNA_Man

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by DNA_Man »

Seems to me that setting up the car so that performance is the best
it can be given the average quality of the fuel in the area in which
the car is sold would be tuning it up, not detuning it. It irritates
me that people say that because it makes it sound as if the company
is not selling you the best possible car that they can, and it's
simply not the case. They aren't selling the car in Japan, they
aren't selling it in Australia, they are selling it in the US, where
the octane is an average of 91. It would be stupid to tune the car to
run on a higher octane than that, since that would cause performance,
mileage and reliability to suffer.

I love a good mud slinging match, but sheesh... I thought we were a
group of people who _liked_ Subarus. Sure, I'm dissapointed that I
can't get the same stuff they get over in Japan, but I appreciate the
fact that I don't have to take my car to the track to fill it up!

We have 91 octane in Colorado because we have less dense air, and the
car runs better on a lower octane, given the lower density of the
air. Josh, please correct me if I'm wrong about that, but if we were
running a higher octane gas up here, wouldn't we have to increase the
compression, or turbo boost somehow in order to get the same level of
fuel efficiency? That is why you see 93 down in PA(sea level), and 91
up here in colorado (mile high).

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by Ian Shastko »

As far as detunning goes you are half right. Of course they are not going to
sell a car that isn't efficient and well rounded. BUT if you think that
subaru did the best they could with this engine you are wrong. They
installed SOHC heads on the car that lets face it are less then spectacular
as far as flow goes (just talk to COBB tunning). Plus no intercooler, and
that is a rare thing. It has been long know that Japan has held on to there
Monsterous engines and highly tuned cars. Even though they have 101 octain
fuel subaru could have done more with the engine. If we would have gotten
the EJ20 from the RS with its quad cam higher flow heads and intercooler it
would have easilly made 190-200hp with our octain and would have faced off
better to the mitsubishi galant vr4 that produced 195hp. So in my book they
could have done much more, and frankly if it makes you feel better they
de-potentialized it.

Josh Colombo

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by Josh Colombo »

Yeah you're correct about the dense air.

However with a turbo since you are forcing air in there.....you could benefit from higher octane if you were having detonation or pre-ignition problems. If you're not....not sure you would see any increases.

Higher octane just means you need more energy to ignite it. There's nothing to fancy about it.....I believe with higher octane fuel....there's just more a more complex atomic structure on the exterior of the hydro-carbon molecule so it takes more energy to ignite it, which is why it was said if you are getting pinging in yoru car to run higher octane fuel.

Now a days.....if your car doesn't say to stick it in...don't bother....you're wasting your money.

I run 89 in mine....The car runs consitantly better on 89 in comparison to 87, however doesn't run any better, and in some cases worse...when I put premium in it.....don't ask me why......

Post by Doug Hancock »

I would like to add to that. The Liberty was first made and developed in
Japan. So of cause they make it run on there fuel. Then about six months
later its all over the world tuned for there particular fuel. Not saying the
factory is ripping the F#@K out of use. When the B4 finally hit Australia's
shores it was DETURNED for 98 octain fuel. The suspension was revised for
Australian roads, much more durable. By the way we only had 96 octain about
2 years ago and all we had was the WRX coming out of Subaru. They released
the STI's and just about every one of them had to be rebuilt. 400 in the
first batch and 400 in the second. Now we have the STI avalible in unlimited
numbers. Why. It has been DETUNED for ozi fuel.

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by Doug Hancock »

Maybe Subaru thought they would not sell a lot. Besides they would have just
put the 2l in instead of the 2.2l. Why muck around with a new engine that
will cost the earth. Compare prices for the Legacy and your average V8 with
a little more power. Australia has seen a very quick growth over the past
ten years with the old V8 is slowly dying. It will never die but the turbo
is here and it is very strong.

So in my book they
could have done much more, and frankly if it makes you feel better they
de-potentialized it.

why does a wrx make 200+ hp?

Post by legacycentral »

The excuse that Subaru gave Car and Driver in 1991 when they tested
the Sport Sedan was that the 2.0 DOHC was too expensive.

They didn't sell too many turbos, they were less than %5 of the
total sales of the Legacy from 91-94. No wonder they didn't try to
get it to pass emissions for the 95+ and OBD-II.

who said anything about not liking subaru? ;) i was merely using the
term, detuned, loosely. didn't mean to start a who misconbobulation
about it. just wanted to know what made the wrx so special. maybe
next time i'll use untuned instead. sheesh :p
