Group, I have a stock standard 92 Liberty RS Turbo. Where I come from( North Qeensland, Australia), it is difficult to obtain premium unleaded fuel (95 RON). I can get standard unleaded petrol (ULP) which BP tell me is 91 RON. If I run the 91 for everday driving, will I be causing damage to my engine? I don't mind a slight decrease in performance, so long as there is no damage? I would like to be able to cruise on the highway at 140km/hr. What is the highest speed I can safely do on 91?
Thanks
Ross

Your Liberty should be fine on that RON rating. The poor buggers over
there in the US only get 92 as their maximum!!
When you are in town, and have access to 98/95 RON use it, just to
give the engine a buit of a clean out, as most of our higher octane
fuels also flush out the system!

you should be ok running 91RON fuel in the RS, especially if it is
stock - as the boost is quite low. You will suffer in performance
but keep an ear out for engine pinging whilst under load.... this is
where the damage can be caused. If you run 91RON constantly the ecu
will 'learn' this and when switching back to 95RON you will need to
reset the ecu or wait a few tankfulls for the ecu to relearn to gain
max performance again....

Thanks Rod, what would you call 'under load'? Is cruising at 140k in 5th on
flat highway ok?

140 in 5th on flat rd it would hardly be trying, come to a steep hill
and it will start to boost hard to keep speed up and put the engine
under 'load'... you will hear if it is pinging, sounds like stones
being thrown up under your bonnet.
I would suspect the ecu will pick learn your on the 'low' octane
fuel and keep ignition retarded somewhat anyway. If the ecu has real
problems with the fuel it will go into safe mode and you will be
likey to be boosting @ 6psi....
