how to: custom color grille emblem

Post by subychris94 »

on my 91ss i did my grille with a red back ground i figured this out and have done it several times and it works great. First off removed emblem from grille being careful not to damage the back of the emblem or the grille use a trim removal tool something plastic , after removing emblem on the back it will be covered in double sided foam tape use mineral spirits or paint prep all works good to and remove tape ,under the tape there will be a layer of rubber like material that will have to scraped off , i used an exacto knife blade and paint prep-all and being gentle removed the coating and then you can start sanding i start with 500 grit sand paper and sand it until all the color is gone and all you see is the clear plastic around the stars be care full not to sand the back of the stars to keep paint from bleeding past the chrome on the stars. When i do this i will sand in four steps to get rid of any scratches from sanding before paint the more time you spend on this step the more vivid the end color will be i sand up to 3000 grit. After sanding clean the emblem again with prepall or denatured alchohol or some equivelent then choose you paint and how you want to apply it I use a brush and model paint designed for plastic , I apply in several thin coats to get the best results being sure not to brush to much so as not to get alot of air bubbles in paint they will show up as dark spots from the front let dry reapply 3m double sided foam tape and reinstall and sit back and enjoy, this is not a big deal but sometimes the little things make all the differenceImage

Awesome! Thanks! I was wondering if there was a way to do this. I don't know what color I'd do, but it's cool nonetheless.

Great job.
I just repainted my grille and was throwing around the idea to take the emblem apart and touch that up as well.

Can you repaint or touch up the stars at all?
