1993 Legacy Speedometer sticking?

Post by Chris Chirdon »

Hi gang. Here's my latest small issue. In my 1993 Legacy, the speedometer
has been sticking somewhat.

Symptoms:
Under moderate acceleration, (say, 0-30) I can observe the speedo creep
up, then suddenly burst to a correct speed.
While roadtripping this weekend, I would get to speed (say, 70 MPH) then
watch the tach. I could accelerate nearly 250 or more rpm WITHOUT the
speedo needle moving, then it would kind of jump foreward.

It must be that something somewhere needs to be lubricated, but has anyone
an idea of what exactly? ANyone else have this issue?

Please let meknow!
=)

Chris,
I had the same problem in my previous liberty.
I took the Speedo cable out lubricated it etc, made no difference. In the end I bought a new speedo cable, which fixed the problem. At the time I think it had about 190,000km on it.
cheers, Rod... in oz

YES! I had that exact same problem with my 1990 sedan. I'm sure the
message is still in the archive somewhere. I also had the opportunity
to radar my car, and the speedo is reading 5mph low. I haven't
bothered to fix it, cuz I hardly ever hit the highway and I haven't
had the problem at low speeds.

I went through a speedo check here in Oz recently. 110km/h on speedo was
104km/h on radar. Imperial users can either get with the program (or
programme even!) or do the conversion themselves. :)

205/60/15 on factory alloys. They were sold new here with Michelin MXVs
of that size and I now have Michelin Pilot HXs on it. They're a bit worn
but must be as close to stock as you can get.

93 Touring wagon Automatic

109000 miles but only 65000 on engine

I have always suspected my speedo to be off some... I have timed it between mile markers on the interstate and figure that 90 mph on the guage is about 84 actual. factory wheels and tires replaced by the book.

My top speed by the guage is about 123 mph. This sound about right???

The speedo's I think are calibrated about 5 mph off on purpose......Mine is almost dead on 5 mph off, once it gets above like 30-40 mph.

How do I know that......GPS baby.....nice little toy to play with :)

1993 Legacy Speedometer sticking?

Post by Rod »

FYI
when motor magazine road tested the RS Liberty, way back then, they found the speedo read:
60 km/h true 57
80 = 76
100 = 95
120 = 114
which means it is constantly about 5.3% lower than reality.
cheers, Rod ... in Oz
