Hi. I have a `90 non-turbo Legacy LS. Every morning there appears to
be a small puddle of water that forms under the rear of the engine
(it's not coming from the front of the engine - water pump). I've
seen it dripping from the two bolts that are directly behind the oil
pan. Any ideas?

Also, the engine just started with a rather loud valve tap. Is it
possible that there is a simple fix?

I have about 150000 miles on it. Thanks.

?? Umm... Tighten the bolts? (!)

Do these bolts have socket in the middle that look like they would take a
hex? Where are they located? What are they holding? Are you sure it's water?
What does the "water" smell like? Is it in the garage or outside? Is the
"water" oily or watery? What fluids are you low on? When you get the
tappet - under what conditions is it most evident? Like driving up hill, or
at idle?

By chance are you located in an area that you would be inclined to use
your A/C. Does the puddle form from the night before or during the
morning warm-up?

They're the front two bolts (of 4 bolts) that hold a plate to the
crossmember that is located directly behind the oil pan.

Are you sure it's water?
> What does the "water" smell like?

It's lignt amber in color - like beer. It smells slightly oily.

Is it in the garage or outside?

Outside.

Is the

Really watery. When the car is moved the leak avaporates in the sun.

What fluids are you low on?

The radiator was about a pint low. THe engine and automatic
transmission fluids looked OK.

When you get the

Taps all of the time. It sounds like it's comming from the rear of
the engine on the passenger side.

I live in Arizona, so I do use the A/C. I just checked this morning
and it was dripping (before I even started it). It looks like it was
dripping for a while.

Does the A/C normally drip in the middle? I don't rememeber it doing
that last year...

It drips off the side......you can see a small hose comin from the
firewall from the condenser box. That is the drain from the A/C.

Sounds like you got some other problems.....A/C drip shouldn't be
amber...and smell like oil.....

Well my engine isn't all that clean ;-) so water could pick up traces
of oil from my engine block.

I did look on the firewall and saw a hose coming out on the passenger
side. Nothing is soming out of that hose.

Could it be condensation? Or is it too much water for something of that
nature? If you fill the radiator, is it low a month or so later? (basically,
I'm trying to identify the source)

BTW, I haven't gone out to the car to stick my head under there to figure
out what you are talking about yet, although I thought I had the underside
of my car memorized...

I gotta replace some seals tomorrow (valve cover) so I'll take a lookie
then...

I guess it could be condensate. It just seems weird to be in the
middle of the car and dripping even in the morning. I'll have to
drive it around with the A/C and see if the problem goes away.

Yeah, thanks. I haven't added water for many months, so I'm not sure,
but I don't think it's a big leak - yet.

Hopefully you'll see what I mean - I may not be explaining it very
accurately. Thanks.
