Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
A friend imported an early 90s Legacy EJ20 recently, for the sole
purpose of installing it in a 93 Impreza Wagon. He's recently
started taking the engine off, and sent me some pictures so that i
might help him identify some specifics on the engine itself.
It's obviously and EJ20T, and came with the silver A/W intercooler.
We're certain that it came from a JDM car, via Australia, but not
much more.
I have a page with some pictures of block numbers, deck face and cams.
It looks to me like a closed-deck block, but i was wondering if
anyone out there can shed more light on it.
The page can be found here:
http://www.xmission.com/~dac/library/noah_ej20t.htm
Thanks for any input.

I think the Silver Intercoolers were on the 94 on Impreza's and Legacy's. Mine is black from a 92.

Thanks Mark.
I added a LOT more pics.
One thing i did notice is that one of the pics shows what looks like
a flex-plate, so it probably came from an automatic.

Yes, the flex plate were for the Auto's. Automatics were more popular in the cars, like they are here in North America. When I got my motor, I had to ask for them to switch the flywheel. As a note, the flywheel from a 2.2 Turbo is identical to the 2.0 turbo flywheel.

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
I would also say looks like a JDM engine. Can't remember why the silver intercooler (think this has been covered here before) cos my JDM 91 wagon has a black one just like the UK model. The top of intake manifold has a bracket and a couple of holes on the top just in front of the throttle body which is for another bracket. This is for a plastic cover (purely cosmetic) which I have only seen on JDM cars. It does add that finishing touch though.

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
That engine looks alot like the one I imported from Japan, silver
intercooler and all. You should look at the sticker on the time belt
cover (bottom-left if you are looking at the front of the engine) if
you can read it, it should give you the engine ID number
(EJ20xxxx...) and that will help you to identify it much easier. My
problem was that the sticker was worn off and I couldnt read past the
EJ20 letters. Hope this helps - Noah.

Dave,
Engine is DEFINITELY closed-deck variety.....My understanding was
that silver intercoolers came on GT sedans (auto only) & GT wagons
(auto or rare 5spd manual) whereas the RS (manual sedan only) had a
black intercooler...certainly my JDM 1991 RS sedan has a black
intercooler & I've only ever seen silver on GT sedans & wagons...
Hope that helps...

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
Looks like a standard jap import EJ20. The silver intercoolers have an
overflow/return system on the coolant cap for the IC, the black ones don't.
This is possibly due to the auto having a smaller turbo and therefore
spending more time on boost than the larger turbo'd manual car which could
boil the IC water, making an overflow necessary. Just a theory.
Why has he pulled the engine down?
Cheers. Al.

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
I looked the pics over and as far as I can tell this engine is the
same as the engines in Denver and the same as the one that I finished
the install on in the '95 Impreza. These engines have the silver
intercooler, VF10 turbo's and the harness was also cut close to the
same place. The engines here came from Germany, I was present when one
of the parties that does the importing was talking about them and I
did not reveal that I speak German. From what I could find out these
are EJ20G engines 208hp@6800 and 15lbs boost. I have also heard the
same engines refered to as "WRX 280hp" and don't believe it. It
appears that these engines were pulled out of European Legacy's or
Liberty's that were salvage and would think it is a bit of a gamble
buying one unless a person can get a good warranty on them as we have
one with a crack in it and no warranty. Last I heard there is one left
at $1800.00 but it has a broken IAC valve, cut harness and no cover.

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
I have always thought that 1800usd was very high considering the
condition of the motors here and what these places have in them. I can
do quite a bit to my EJ22t for that kind of money and have a better
idea of what I have. Do you know of any place that has parts for the
EJ20? We have a few around here.

I actually buy most of my parts either from my Subaru dealer or my autoparts store. There is a lot of parts that are the same as the EJ22T.

Need help with identifying an EJ20 Block
going by the picture it is definitely a closed deck block.
Since the heads are off, what kind of rocker gear /tappet setup is installed ? ie. in order - tappet, then pivot ,then clip prior to the rocker arm or is there also a spring in-between here... ?
