Question about Turbo Upgrade, VF10 to...

Post by legacycentral »

My VF10 is leaking a little oil on the compressor side, and so while
i'm looking for a possible rebuild, i'm also invesigating upgrade
possiblities.

I know that WRX guys are ditching the stock turbos almost as fast as
their bland wheels, so getting one almost new for $300 isn't
uncommon, but fitting it to a Legacy would involve some work to get
the intake charge in properly.

So, i contacted a place that i know has Subaru turbos and found that
they have a TD04 for a very good price. This is the style with the
molded in 90 degree bend on the inlet, which i do need. I'm
seriously considering this, but i need to know if this is indeed a
better turbo that the VF10.

I read on an MRT FAQ that the Ver 1,2 and 3 WRX had this turbo, with
the bend, but the later models didn't because they were slightly
smaller for less lag.

I don't want much if any more lag than i have right now.

So, the question for the turbo experts is: Will a TD04 with a 90 be a
good upgrade from a VF10 without sacrificing low end torque and
getting lag?

Dave

Dave, the early WRXs up to the MY97 had the TD05 with the 90 degree bend.
The MY97 onwards sport the TD04, which would require some modding to fit on
to your manifold. The TD05 is a fairly decent turbo, in both size and
robustness/boost capacity, but will have more lag than your VF10. A TD04
has a lot less lag than a TD05, and is probably the same as your VF10 in
that respect. My suggestion would be to rebuild your VF10.
