Engine Swaps

Post by rbnski1959 »

Greetings all!

Anyone know if a 91 2.2 Turbo(with auto trans) will fit into a 97
Legacy with a 2.2 5 speed? Having a tough time trying to find a
replacement for my 91 Turbo and was thinking if I couldn't find one
I'd make one. (sort of)

Any thoughts (or turbos for sale?)

hear in Australia it is not legal to put in an older engine that the car was
fitted with. Mainly because of emissions. The 97 car was passes with a
curtain emissions that will be allot different to 91 car. I would check your
local authorities before going ahead with any thing.

Your welcome. This should be a warning to all car enthusiasts. Make sure
that you have spoken to engineers and the authorities before wasting money.

I have a '94 turbo motor in my '95 Imprezza and was told that the
emmissions would apply to the car not the engine but I have also heard
of someone having some difficulty with the emmissions folk with a
Subaru Vangon conversion somewhere so it is best to check first.

Engine Swaps

Post by vwsyncroguy »

This applies to California. Not sure about other states

To be smog legal you can put a different engine in your chassis if
the engine comes from the same the same or later year vehicle. I
think you will have a lot of trouble trying to put an engine into
your chassis that comes from an earlier year.

The basic rules in CA for engine swaps is that all the smog and
emmission controls that were on the vehicle THE ENGINE COMES FROM
must work on the car the engine is going into.

This is not too difficult for years 90-94 which all have "OBD-1"
engine diagnostic systems. After 94, most manufacturers changed
to "OBD-2" diagnostics which had much more extensive diagnostic
routines for the ECU and more sensors on the engine and the
vehicle. It also requires a special tool to read the ECU's
diagnostics rather than a simple blinking light on the dashboard or
ECU as in OBD-1.

An exception to this is that the SVX retained OBD-1 diagnostics
through '97.

I have a 1991 Legacy AWD 2.1 litre turbo with transmission problems.
It looks like it will be expensive to repair. I have found a 2.5
litre engine c/w transaxle ant automatic transmission I would like to
replace my 2.1 with. Does anyone out there have any experiance with
this?
Thanks, Steve

Chances are you really have a 2.2L. You could do that 2.5 - and earn
yourself a massive headache, and an empty wallet, or you could get a 2.0L
and you'd end up with:

1. A better engine that can pump out some serious HP.
2. A car that works.
3. No headache.
4. Still have an empty wallet. (no way around that tranny?)

New belts, and gaskets ~$100
New ECU ~$400
New Transmission ~$800 (get a 5 speed manual T)
New engine ~$1200
The ability to crank out +300 HP, priceless!
