What size and type of intercooler do you guys use on your sedans or
wagons. Is there a preferred manufacturer?

I used an IC off a 95 WRX EURO Spec. If i knew what i know now i would
have used a Water/Air IC as mine heats up alot. Either that or get a
bigger hood scoop, but i haven't figured out how to get one installed on
the car without spending 600 dollars on it.

Any intercooler is better than none in 98% of circumstances.

A bigger hood scoop would be nice, so would a fiberglass hood with RS
vents and scoop...

Dave-

What kind of car did your intercooler come off of? How
is it working for you? was there A LOT of custom work
to make it fit?

I was lucky to find an intercooler from a 2.5RS intercooler project
on eBay. The guy was running in the 13s with it, but wanted more, so
i ended up with it.

It's relatively small, but 3.5" thick and uses a Spearco core. I was
concerned about the turbo-IC connection, but i found a lower radiator
hose that fit 98% perfect. Getting the IAC and BOV routing done
right took another few days, but it's all sorted out now.

So...not terribly hard.

I'll try again... my posts are getting screwed up!

I have just installed a Saab 900 intercooler. Fit well. My dissapointment is that the max sustained boost at WOT is 9 psi. If I use the manual mode of my auto tranny, the boost will maintain 15-17 psi. This is OK except I don't like launching the car in 2nd - hard on the tranny and it's slow! What kind of boost can you maintain in the 1/4 mile run? Have I maxed out my turbo? BTW - I'm running my turbo to the max - wastegate control line is disconnected giving me full potential.

I can't seem to boost over 11PSI after the intercooler installation,
but i think it might be because of the restrictive nature of the
intercooler, stock downpipe, and perhaps a mis-tuned AVC-R.

I'm getting a 2.5" catless DP made today, so we'll see if that helps.

I'm curious on something.....
Have you upgraded your fuel delivery system (pump, injectors, etc.)? As
far as I have been told the current fuel system can't handle any more than
13psi, hence why the fuel cut-off is there.

You're goin to blow your engine with that wastegate control line disconnected! It is there for a reason. There's no reason to disconnect that. Hook it back up, buy yourself a good MBC set it to whatever boost pressure you want, and then go from there to see how things go and such.

Number one thing you should have done is get a boost controller, whether it be manual, or electronic. It will bypass the ECU's measely boost level cuts.

Hey Adam,

Why is it that a larger hoodscoop costs that much? I've seen nice
fiberglass ones for 150 bucks. Couldn't you chop a hole and glue it
down with some glass and resin? Also How many pounds are you getting
with that IC?

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks for the reply. I am only diconnecting the wastegate vaccum to prove to myself that I have exceeded the capabilities of my turbo. If it won't push more than 10 psi through my intercooler I am not going to keep this intercooler installed. I will not be running the car with the disconnected line - infact the intercooler and all is out and I'm back to my previous setup. I have 2 different manual boost controllers that I have tried and am now using an electronic setup. I have also advanced my timing considerably and this alone has proven to be the most potent mod on my turbo. I can see from my testing I could use a bigger turbo!

Intercooling a Sport Sedan

Post by Matthew Reese »

Here's the idea. After an ECU reset, the timing is advanced. The knock senosr is then monitored and the appropriate amount of retard is applied. I have removed my knock senosr (15,000 miles now - hard running at that!) and I have replaced it with a 22K ohm grounded resistor. This fools the ECU - it never hears knock and it prevents the CEL. The catch - take it easy unless I'm running a ~96 or 97 octane mix ( I usually do cause I can't take it easy...). I have had amazing success with this setup. My boost sits in around 12psi and I fly! (for an old car with an auto)

Intercooling a Sport Sedan

Post by Matthew Reese »

The power is an addiction - I could have a worse habit. Nothing like blowing away Mustangs from light to light every Friday night - actually I'm beginning to forget the feeling - they won't race me anymore : )

Here's the math...

15 gal would be my max fill up. 15 gal of 93 octane @ 1.55/gal = $23.25 or for the good stuff at a 2:1 mix (98.5 octane - more than enough) 10 gal of 93octane @ $1.55/gal and 5 gal of 110 octane @ $3.60/gal = $33.00.

This will last me a week and I am not really concerned about $10 bucks a week!

Time to Turbo the Sube Josh : )

I have removed my knock senosr (15,000 miles now - hard running at that!) and I have replaced it with a 22K ohm grounded resistor. This fools the ECU - it never hears knock and it prevents the CEL. The catch - take it easy unless I'm running a ~96 or 97 octane mix ( I usually do cause I can't take it easy...). I have had amazing success with this setup. My boost sits in around 12psi and I fly! (for an old car with an auto)

Hey Adam, do you live in Ottawa, ON? I'll be there July 4th to 8th. It would be nice to meet a fellow Turbo owner!

For all Turbo owners - What are your best 1/4 mile times. I cannot break 15 seconds and it's killing me. I am not to happy with the shift points of the auto above 60 mph. I have seen the need for the old intercooler after some runs - I'm working on a solid instalation of the Saab intercooler. Post you times and mods!

The reason I'm pumped on the 1/4 - an abondoned track, which has been closed for years has just been opened up. The gate is gone and there are no signs prohibiting use. The owner must be crazy but I'm going to keep running it to something happens or someone bites the dust : )

Intercooling a Sport Sedan

Post by Adam Archibald »

Yes I do live in Ottawa. There is one other owner that is new to the list
that also lives in Ottawa, i have yet to meet him but July 4th to 8th would
be a good time :) Would love to see you car. email my address and i will
give you my home and cell numbers, just don't want to post them here as
there is a buch of crazy legacy owner out there ;P

As for my 1/4 i have no idea, never ran it. After my mods this summer i'm
sure i will go down and see how i do. As for mods.
intercooler form 95 WRX EURO spec
2.5 exhaust with high flow cat and up pipe, reative muf.
STI engine mounts, spark plugs & wires
Slotted Roaters, Carbon F pads
17' Primax rims
Falcon GB-R tires 7' wide
shitty little K&N air filter :P (that must add atleast 20 hp hahaha!)

Intercooling a Sport Sedan

Post by c150cglzp »

Hey Adam and Matt,

That would be sweet if the three of us could meet up when your in
Ottawa. We should head over to luskville Dragway (10 miles west of
Hull). 15 bucks buys you a whole night of racing. Last weeks a new WRX
was running mid 14's stock, manual. Blowing away every car there,
except for the really fancy pro mods. If all goes well I should be the
owner of a 91 BC Turbo in a few days. However it'll be a project car
which'll take me a few months to get running. Untill then I'm running
a 93 BC auto.

Later,
Mark
