91 legacys have rear springs that are smaller diameter at the top
than the bottom.the front springs are the same but the rears are
different. i have been through this on my 90wagon and 91t-sedan. the
problem is that the strutmount body area at the top is smaller and
the larger spring hats will not fit in the smaller space.i found this
out by trial and error...whiteline does make 90-91 specific
springs, mrt used to as i have a set of the yellow springs mated to
agx's..i am waiting on a set of blue whitelines for my turbo sedan to
arrive stateside from mrt. who knows why subaru chose to hold over
the smaller rear strut tower for the 90-91 but it makes for a big
p.i.a. for all of us early legacy owners.you could find out about the
wrx springs by asking a dealer, mrt or spo etc. to measure the tops of
the rear springs and compare with the dimension of the bottom...if
they are the same dimension it is a newer version...if i remember
correctly 90-91 rear spring tops are about 4-7/8"...a lot smaller
than the bottom of the springs..i will measure the set i have and
post it later..david

Yeah there are two sizes for the rear between 89-94 (series 1 & 2). The springs on the series 2 known as the facefift model has a larger dia spring.

WRX springs
Thanks for all the info David,
Question.......can you retro-fit the 90-91 legacy rear springs with the
92-94 springs and top mounts? Or is there a physical size limitation on
the 90-91 legacies. I would like to get sti top mounts, but I don't
know if they're goin to make top mounts for the 90-91 legacies.
Any info/comments would be great.
Thanks
Josh

WRX springs
Adam,
You read ciper's post in the legacy forum?
http://forums.i-club.com/forums/showthr ... 825&pagenu
mber=2
Can someone measure the upper diameter of the rear springs when they
take them off?
The incorrect rear springs I received from whiteline are so large They
wont even fit in the upper wheel well no matter what spring seat I have.
The person I'm working with at Whiteline told me these are the correct
springs for the turbo.
I told him the approximate diameter of my rear springs (3.5 at top 4.5
at bottom?) and he said that I need the FWD springs.
He said that since my car originally had air suspension and that I had
converted it to standard is where the problem arose. Except that I KNOW
I'm using the 4wd suspension, I mean the upper spring seats have "4wd
only - OUT" indented in the metal .
It seems that from the limited research I have done that the first year
of turbo legacy uses the same small spring while the later years use the
larger spring. I don't know how accurate that is though.
Kinda sucks, I placed the order for these springs at the beginning of
April and as of now they still are not installed
According to what he says....they "physically" won't fit in the
fenderwell. Now I'm not sure if it is different due to BF chassis vs.
BC
I've got springs for my car on order......so we shall see how things end
up.
There really does seem to be a bit of discrepancy among vendors,
dealerships, tuners out there for the old gen legacy as to what will
fit, and what will not.
This group has been very helpful in educating me.
