Something not right with my engine...?

Post by paul.travers@vodafone.co. »

Hi All

There is a faint knocking/tapping sound coming from SOMEWHERE in the bowels
of my EJ20T engine... Didnt happen overnight but lately it doesnt seem to
be running as smooth as when I first got it 5 months ago. But performance
seems as good as before.

Now my girlfriends flatmate fancys himself as a mechanic, thinks "maybe a
bearing". But Im not letting him anywhere my scooby...
My question is, does the "check engine" light come on if ANYTHING is not as
it should be? eg can I assume that if it is not coming on then my engine
is fine?

Any advise is much appreciated.

PS - A guy here at work is selling his Black 1994 (new shape) twin turbo
wagon for NZ$11,000. 155km. Let me know if youre interested I'll forward
you his details.

thanks
Paul

Something not right with my engine...?

Post by Josh Colombo »

The cel will not come on for a mechanical device failing. You need to
describe the noise a little better. A bearing on its way out is a
definate knocking. Not very faint. I'm assuming you checked your oil
level and such correct?

Could be lifters may need adjusting. Try to pinpoint whether the noise
is coming from the block area or the heads.

You might want to follow up with the shop on the valve job the did. Years ago I purchased a Subaru that had a valve problem, under the condition the dealer fixed it first.... He did. When I had problems the following year and went back for help I learned they only did one side.

what oil are you using??
I had a similar noise coming from the head, about 2 weeks after an
oil change. It worked out to be the lifters sticking because of the
different oil (shell helix syn). I changed my oil back to the
previous brand(pennzoil synthetic blend - excellent) then had
some 'magic' lifter fixer added (this expensive grey stuff)and all
was smooth again.
maybe its the same deal?? if not then never mind.

cheers

funny you said that I just had an oil change at Midas (dont go there BTW
they are dodgy) I asked for semi-synthetic they put in full synthetic
instead (or so they said - they didnt fill in the windscreen sticker
correctly, wrote 15w-50 or some crazy thing which is why I questioned
them).
Is the pennzoil "blend" a semi-synthetic? I used 10w-40 semi-syn
previously and perhaps this is what I need to do.
Um, what is the magic lifter fixer called and where can I get it?

Why does full synthetic make this happen?

Hey anyway thanks a lot for the tip its much appreciated

I have been talking to so many people about this recently. Use only Synthetic shit. I have just put 10w60 Castrol and it is magic. After about 5000kms of trouble with oils I have finally found one. By all means use your brand of oil but cheak the grade you use. I also tried Valvaline Synpower 20w50 shit, Valvaline formula 5000 20w40 half blend shitter. Need I go on.

Something not right with my engine...?

Post by Josh Colombo »

The debate about oils will continue on and on.......

Personal experience/suggestions, find a motor oil that works and stick with it!!! Do not be swapping oils, especially between dino and synthetic or semi-synthetic.

Switching between different brand oils is a no-no....the reason being is every manufacturer puts a different set of additives and such in there. When you put oil in your engine it bonds to the metal....when you put a different kind of oil in there, the additives in that oil break down the bonds on the other oil, and then the new oil has to go through the whole process of bonding with the metal and so forth.

Dino and synthetic. Switching back and forth is not good as it can really cause hell with your seals. Not all synthetics may do this, but I have heard of some instances where when you go back to dino oil from synthetic the seals will dry out, and the engine leaks oil like a mofo.

Synthetic oils are the MOST deterginated oils......is the best engine cleaner out there. They will strip all the crap from your engine!

So big point to take away.....stick with the same oils.....avoid the jiffy lube places.....most of them don't have a clue what's goin on.

Plus with most of these motors in our legacies......they are higher mileage motors. It may not be a good idea to switch over to synthetic later in its life........just my thought on the matter.

Something not right with my engine...?

Post by Rod »

Josh,
I understand what you mean. Here in Aust our Liberty's suffered from bad lifter noise and oils can make a tremendous difference. If the car had not had the wrx head/piston swap done under warranty then it will be inevereratable that the lifters will get noisy. Mine did it after about only 68,000km, not high mileage by any means. The noise maybe not bad and you might think you can get used to it but it has other consequences such as bad fuel economy and lack of performance..... due to the fact that the knock sensor considers this noise 'pinging' and sets the ecu fuel map/ignition curve and boost into safe mode. My RS during this time could only get 9psi boost - my chip is for 17psi - and only about 350km on a tank of fuel.
I myself tried many oil visc's. The winter weight didn't seem to make any difference, i.e. be it 5W / 10W / 15W
but the high visc did. When a ?W-30 was used the noise was accentuated. ?W-40 not much better. 5W-50 was good for a while. Doug who sent the previous post is now on 10W-60 which seems ok. I know that oil manufactures are suggesting around 5W-30 these days. Subaru do also. Though if you look on most oil company websites they list a higher visc oil for the RS Liberty, e.g. 15W-40 / 20W-50 etc. So I;m sure they're thinking along the same lines.... that's where I actually thought about oil types and then tried the heavier visc oil's. I ended up having the heads modified to fix the lifter noise..... didn't know about Castrol 10W-60 then.
If you don't have lifter problems and all is fine I would use a 5W-30 or 40.....
cheers, Rod ... in Oz

Need I go on.

funny you said that I just had an oil change at Midas (dont go there BTW
they are dodgy) I asked for semi-synthetic they put in full synthetic
instead (or so they said - they didnt fill in the windscreen sticker
correctly, wrote 15w-50 or some crazy thing which is why I questioned
them).
Is the pennzoil "blend" a semi-synthetic? I used 10w-40 semi-syn
previously and perhaps this is what I need to do.
Um, what is the magic lifter fixer called and where can I get it?

Why does full synthetic make this happen?

Hey anyway thanks a lot for the tip its much appreciated

what oil are you using??
I had a similar noise coming from the head, about 2 weeks after an
oil change. It worked out to be the lifters sticking because of the
different oil (shell helix syn). I changed my oil back to the
previous brand(pennzoil synthetic blend - excellent) then had
some 'magic' lifter fixer added (this expensive grey stuff)and all
was smooth again.
maybe its the same deal?? if not then never mind.

I use Pennzoil Semi Synth 10-40 it works great.
The special magic lifter fixer, well all I can remember is that it
was a funny lookin grey/silver oil. It only needed about 200ml added
after a clean oil change. Within minutes it was running very smooth
and quiet. You might need to ask around for a similar product from a
local engine shop(make sure its a good one).

Something not right with my engine...?

Post by Ross »

At the moment I am using BP C6 Global 15W40 diesel oil with one litre of Moreys, seems to work well, but I might try the 10W60 Castrol, does anyone know the name of it? By the way, I ended up getting Michelin Vivacy tyres, very smooth, quiet tyre, the difference in comfort is unbelievable.

Josh,
I understand what you mean.
If you don't have lifter problems and all is fine I would use a 5W-30 or 40.....
cheers, Rod ... in Oz
