Is it true N/A and turbo alternator is different?

Is it true N/A and turbo alternator is different?

Post by ericem »

Hey talked to a friend who is a mechanic and he said my low voltage at idle is because I am using a N/A alternator. Does that make sense? He said they have different temperature cut outs. I have tried 2 N/A alternators and found at hot idle the voltage goes to 11V. Seems possible. He said he can get ahold of a turbo alternator so we can try. Well see how it goes I guess. Just wondering if anyone had any input. Thanks!

The turbo alternator definitely has higher output but I don't remember the difference off the top of my head. I had a turbo one in until last year and it was great. I replaced it with an NA and had similar idle/etc. issues because I have lots of auxiliary lights, CB, single side-band and shortwave radios, and a direct wired 4-bank inverter that all draw allot of power (I'm field geologist, hence all the weird equipment).

Anyway, my idle issue went away when I turned all the crapola off, and my amps and voltage were back where they were supposed to be. I suspect that an ICE system will similarly effect it as well, particularly a higher-powered amp.
Cheers,
morgan

Higher output is a good enough reason for my issues!! he said the car should be able to run the lights, fans inside and out, and wipers with no problems at idle which is what I would expect from a Subaru of course.

everything i find states that the amperage is the same.70 amps.for any ej alt in the early years.

pretty sure that if you work on your grounds, and add a few that this could help.

cheers, brian
