Avc-r setup problems

Post by siryacho »

Hello all.

I got my new toy, and now my boost is all screwed up.

There's definitely something wrong under the hood with the way I set
up the vacuum lines. The wiring seesms right, as all sensors are
giving correct readings to the Avc-r, but my problem is my fuel cut
keeps kicking in VERY prematurely. So I turned down boost and duty
settings to their minimum... fuel cut still kicked in. Turned start
duty down all the way as well... fuel cut STILL kicked in. I said
to hell with it, and bypassed the boost control solenoid and ran
directly into the wastegate, AND FUEL CUT STILL KICKED IN!!!!

Now I admit, i'm a friggin' idiot thus far when it comes to
mechanics, and I know some of you are gonna say I should have it
professionally installed, but to me, doing this stuff first hand and
learning as I go means as much to me as having a fast ride. (and
yes, I'm prepared to deal with the consequences of blowing up my
car. :) )

So, can anyone tell me the correct vaccuum line setup for using the
Avc-r in our Legacies? Pictures are worth a thousand words. And
which sensor tells the ECU my current boost pressure? Could I have
a bad sensor?

Thanks everybody,

- mike

P.S.: The A/C is out, I'm cleaning up the condenser, and awaiting my
parts for my rigged A/W intercooler setup... should be fun!

Is there a diagram online of how to wire/hook this thing up? You sure you did it properly?

I don't know about the hoses first hand. The pdfs on www.apexi-usa.com has a few pictures of typical layouts.

good luck

Avc-r setup problems

Post by siryacho »

The searches and information I found told me enough about the
wiring, and the manual has the ECU pinout locations for everthing I
need (used diagram F2-b), so I'm almost certian that the wiring is
not the problem. However, I couldn't find anything on the vaccuum
hose layouts. One point of note here though. In the installation
guide in the manual there is a section that reads:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
ADVICE!:
The NC port should be kept open to atmosphere
Keep hose length as short as possible
Subaru vehicles require a WAY to connect to the solenoid
valve
--------------------------------------------------------------------

That last item is interesting. It includes that space there in
front of the word "WAY", that's not just a typo. So i don't get
what this means.

I know there's gotta be a few of you that have this up and running
on the stock turbo setup. Please help.

-mike

EDIT: It seems that yahoo auto-edits extended spaces, so the edit
is the word (space), even though in the manual it's just a big space
about 8 characters long.

I do have an AVC-R for almost 2 years and I just figer it out how to
set up the boost and the following is my set up!
In the [A] setting, I put
Boost:1.00kg/cm2
boost Duty:3000rpm--48%
3500rpm--48%
4000rpm--48%
4500rpm--51%
5000rpm--55%
5500rpm--59%
6000rpm--63%
6500rpm--70%

Feebback speed:
1 2 3 4 5
9 7 7 6 6

Lean Gear: all Off

Start Duty:
1st--45%
2nd--39%
3rd--35%
4th--30%
5th--28%

All I play around is the Start Duty mode (inside section [A] scroll
to the number 6
If it goes over boost, then turn it down a bit, if its not to the
boost you want, then turn up a bit.
I just have this setting after I change to EJ20G engine from Japan
(Japanese 1st Gen. Legacy turbo) and the boost runs well in my car.

Try and let us know hows your car after this kind of setting!!

The settings will be most helpful, but I 've noticed that you're
running 1.00kg/cm2... this is 14.2 psi of boost... isn't the fuel
cut set at 13psi??? Are you running the ECU for the ej20 or
ej22...it could have a different fuel cut setting, i don't know.

By the way, my problem is that the fuel cut jumps in at about
0.26kg/cm2, or about 3.6 psi!!!!!!! ... at least the avc-r display
tells me that, and that's definitely what it feels like. So what
did I do wrong under the hood???
Here's my install:

1. hose from turbo nipple to AVC-r soleniod [NO] port, hose from AVC-
r solenoid [COM] port to wastegate nipple

2. hose from intake manifold vaccum outlet to top of stock MAP, hose
from stock MAP to AVC-r pressure sensor

I've also tried tapping the AVC-r pressure sensor before the MAP,
but the same thing happens. I read on i-club that you need to have
the stock solenoid and pressure sensor still connected electrically,
so I tried that to no avail... so,

HELP!

I have an EJ20G engine but still using the EJ22T ECU... it works
fine to me!!!!

For the hose installation, check Dave's website in the Hallman Boost
controller connection, I base on that information for my hose
connection.

Let me try to take some pics today and post it on the site to let
you take a look on my connections!

Thanks much, Ben, anything helps!

Well, new update. I not only wired the stock pressure solenoid and
sensor back in (both of which, upon 1st install were taken out), but
I now tied the stock sensor to vaccuum. Whalla! No more fuel
cut... at all, i think. I ran the car and, as it's hard to drive
and watch boost at the same time, i think I was spiking to about 1.3
bar or something. This, even though the AVC-r was set to "OFF".
WTF? So I turned it to setting "A", at which I've got everything
set to a minimum. You could hear the solenid clicking like a mofo
at .20 bar, but my boost was still through the roof!! Wategate not
opening???? I'll check it when it cools down.

Also, I'm still wondering if my vaccuum setup is correct. Can
someone PLEEEEEEASE confirm that they've got things hooked up the
way I do? Are you guys still running vaccuum line to your stock
pressure sensor?

Trying, and getting closer,

Hi Mike, check my site and I just did some pics upload.
If you do have any more question, I would try to help you out!

SWEET! Everything works...

I was just being an idiot, and failed to double-check myself on that
last run, and failed to connect the vaccuum hose from the wastegate
back to the solenoid. So it was a good thing that I had my eyes
glued to the AVC-r so I didn't run any crazy boost and damage
anything!

Ben, thanks so much for the pics. So you just left everything stock
hooked up, and just tied in the AVC-r stuff where it needed to be.
Yep that's what I had to end up doing to get mine functional, but
now I can say I'm very happy with the results. Currently I'm on
running your settings, but at a much lower main boost setting. I
still think a lot of fine tuning is involved, especially since I
don't have my intercooler yet (it's coming soon!) so I need to keep
it down some. Also, I think there might be a difference when tuning
the AVC-r to the ej20 and the ej22t. You should have a higher
compression ratio, so things are different. Time to read the manual
a fourth and fifth time, so many settings.

Well thanks again,
