1990 Legacy VIN ?

Post by Tom Redmond »

Hello! Tom R. here, new member. Have a question, or two about the
purchase of a Legacy that's currently in a salvage yard. This is the
VIN - JF2BC65C11H630820 -. I would like some info on what this car
has, ie; motor, drivetrain, fuel system, and such. The car is in
another state, and that makes it difficult to go look at. I do have 2
pictures of it. Been hit in front, looks like they didn't hit the
whoa pedal fast enough. Don't think it hurt radiator, but grill and
D/S headlight is gone, some buckling of the hood. I can purchase this
car, has clean title. The owner of the yard told me to make an offer.
Therein lies my dilema. I am new to the Subaru family of cars, so I'm
not familiar enough with them to make him an offer. I currently own 2
BRATS, and those are all I'm familiar with. Any help would be
appreciated, and I thank you for your help. Tom

Have you considered running a Carfax on the vehicle,
this, of course, could tell you some information. I
think it would be $10 or $20 for the service.
Hopefully someone in the group can fill you in the
decoding the VIN. The motor would certainly be a 2.2
Liter single overhead engine as that would be the only
engine offered in '90. As well as, it would be a
multi-port fuel injection system. Good luck,

Didn't really consider doing that. I know it's a one owner car that's
been wrecked, now sitting in a salvage yard. You answered a few
things I was fuzzy on 2.2L SOHC MPFI. I could tell from one of the
pics, that it was an A/T, but that was about it. Was thinking of
purchasing it just for the drivetrain, mainly the engine, possibly
the rear diff too. I do believe it would make an exellent upgrade for
one of my BRATs. Then I would just part-out the rest of the car. Just
trying to get a feel of what to offer the guy for it. Thanks.

Well,
of course depending on where you are, the value may
be different. I'm here in Colorado where it seems
every fifth car you see is a Subaru. Could you
determine if it was full time 4 wheel drive or a front
wheel drive, because that would be a deciding factor?
Depending, in part on the mileage of the vehicle, and
whether it had four wheel drive, and then I think I'd
have to be confident the engine had a lot of life in
it.

I'm in Southern Lower Michigan, about 20 miles NE of the MiOhIn
border junctions. The car itself is in Ohio. Still don't know
mileage, yard was closed by the time I got back to him. I've been
reading on alot of different boards about these Subes. The engines in
them do seem to last forever. Sofar, I've learned afew things on this
Legacy, 2.2L SOHC MPFI 4SpdA/T AWD, and possibly has a LSD rear diff.
Can't seem to pin that one down, yet. Like I mentioned before, it's
been wrecked. Damage is limited to the front center, driverside
fender area. Did buckle the hood abit, but I don't think it got into
the radiator, or A/C unit. Just judging by the pics anyway. Was going
to try and put the pics in the photo section. But, being a computer
dummy, I managed to loose them somewhere. Asked the guy to send me
somemore. I'm just trying to get ideas as to an offer price to give
him. I don't plan on fixing the car to drive, I just want the goodies
in it. But then again, who knows? I might see it, and change my mind.
Thanks.............Tom

JF2 = MPV (multi purpose vehicle)
B = Subaru
C = 4 door sedan
6 = 2.2 liter
5 = Model LS or LSi
C = weight and restraints
1 = check digit
L = model year, 90
H = transmission, AWD 4EAT (all wheel drive 4 speed automatic)

Are you planning to install the 2.2 in the Brat? That would be interesting…
