Non-rice interior paint/dye question...

Post by soobrdad02 »

Just wanted to now if anyone had used interior paint/dye to color the vinyl/plastic in the car. I'm looking at going from this gnarly faded-tan to a grey or even black for a cleaner, more modern look. Wanted to know how it stood up to wear & tear and if it stunk the car up after application.

Use it regularly, and love it. Duplicolor was the last brand I used, I did my dashboard and a bunch of replacement interior tirm bits. Flat black works great, comes out looking like satin... stay away from gloss. I even did a whole set of cloth seats in our old Cabriolet, re-dyed them red because of sun fade. Never rubbed off on clothing, even when they got wet.

Avoid using it on high-contact areas that are hard plastic or vinyl, like e-brake handles, steering wheels, etc., otherwise it holds up very well, and is easy to touch up.

Little to no smell after it sets up.

...and be *fargin* careful when you take off the trim, it's gotten real brittle by now.

Think I've seen Autozone and/or Advance listed as suppliers elsewhere. Never seen it at NAPA, IIRC.

I used the Duplicolor in my GL (ugly beige to black) and it worked well on the vinyl. The black looked nice and semi-gloss without causing glare after using vinyl protectant on it. OK on the plastic, but like Jerry said, only on parts that don't get much wear. Lucky for me, I stripped a bunch of dark blue parts out of my GL wagon before I had to junk it, so the interior was black and blue. There's probably something symbolic in that.

Here's a link to some pics of my car, I used Dupli Color and it has held up for over 3 years. If you scroll down a couple posts there is a part# for the paint, you may want to read the other posts too as there is lil more info. Anything that is grey has been painted, the biggest part is cleaning very well and letting it fully dry before you paint and after you paint, I used like three light coats and let it dry a little between coats and anything that has a grain is still showing the grain. Feel free to add comments (good/bad) to this thread. http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=42875[url]
