Anyone hear of any for Subarus? They make V8's and a Honda or 2, but I haven't been able to find Subaru. A little surprised with all the odd applications people find for them.

If not, I may make my own out of fiberglass (as well as the fwd transmission, though I'm sure no one would be interested in that). Would there be any interest in buying one? I doubt it, but if I go this route, I can make the mold either a throw-away or something I can reuse. This would be the EJ22 SOHC as I'm using in my project. I'd mold it with the phase 1, dual-port heads out of convenience as the mounting points and clearances are the reason for the project. I realize that molding the block alone and maybe getting a hold of various heads to mold separately would be more useful to people, but I don't care to make a business out of this—I just want an easy way to mock up the powertrain in Tigershark.

I think they have only been making these plastic engines for a few years now. While people might be dropping Subaru engines into planes, and old German cars, I don't think that there is enough demand for the companies make the motors to make Subaru engines.

I'd be happy with a 1/25 Tamiya 1994 Legacy to work with!

I just use dead engines with bad heads.... Heavy still......

Yeah, in most cases that might work, but as this is a completely different application and a kind of tight fit (and facing backwards), having something that I can move by hand will be much easier to work with for figuring out mounting and such. Guess I'll have to make my own.

a bare block bolted together with stripped heads would be pretty light,you could even find a junk open deck and sawzall most of the mass out of it and just leave mounting points intact.

You might be thinking of a traditional car. I have no interest in straining my back bending over a chassis rail to maneuver a 100 lbs.+, even stripped, engine/transmission combo to figure out exactly what to do for the crossmembers. I'd like to be able to move it and lift it with one hand as I'll be doing a lot of that. I don't know about you, but I'm only maybe a 160 lbs. guy. The chassis will look something like a kayak in plan view with the upper parallel tubing of the chassis at about hip height, maybe higher, and it will have just enough width in a short space ahead of the gas tank to clear the heads. Unlike the instal in a Subaru, the heads won't be sitting on top of the frame rails, but within the inside of them and trying to keep this thing narrow necessitates a minimum of room to the sides. I need to get the mounting points right while clearing the exhaust, leaving enough room to change out the timing belt, and keeping the tail of the transmission back far enough so that it doesn't stick out the radiator intake (and the further back it goes, the greater the angularity of the CV joints, which shortens their life). I also have to fit the radiator and ducting in there as well. It should all fit, it's just a matter of finesse.

I didn't go to the end of the thread, but do they make the running ones? I've seen running scale engines, too. Wild. Way more patience than I'll ever have. I'm not actually done with that balsa engine, but I wanted to post a picture so you'd get an idea. Not that it'll look anything like that guy's work.
