the list, and a collective groan from the other half . . .
I have this 91 legacy family grocery getter with 195,000 km on the clock.
The 5MT is JUST starting to balk a bit on the 4 --> 3 shift without double
clutching so I figure the syncros are getting a bit dodgy. Nothing really
serious. However, I will be selling the car next spring when I
return home (to canada, from NZ) and I would prefer not to have
to explain double clutching to prospective purchasers

Is there a modest gear oil, easily available that will favour the syncros a
bit on the sub? I have NO idea what is in there now. Might not even be
gear oil for all I know -- smells like it though. Considering the
mileage and the type of driving, I don't think I have to worry about
heat and stress -- just driveability. As for what is easily available down
here: all the usual multinationals, plus Redline, I think, and duckhams(?) . . . .
Rebuilt gearbox swap in NZ is estimated at about 2K, while the car is
worth, AT MOST about 3K, so the economics of doing the right thing
and rebuilding the box are questionable, at best. I HAVE
heard (somewhere) that sub's are touchy on the type of gear oil used
and it is always a good idea to try that before pulling out the box.
any and all opinions appreciated. Chris
