Replacing axle, driveshaft popped out?

Post by ballzak »

So I'm the proud new owner of a 92 legacy right hand drive. Was replacing the axle for the first time yesterday. The passengers side (drivers side for me) came off pretty easy but the other side had a chunk of spring clip broken off inside. I didn't know this so I gave it a few hard yanks and it popped out and brought with it an approx 4 inch shaft with splines on both sides. Hmmm... didn't know what to think. I'm new to this stuff and am not too sure what I jerked out of the diff or if I can just jam it back in and call it good. Diff's are out of my league. Did I break something?

I can get pics when I'm off work.

Maybe it's the end of the axle? Post a pic

I'll have pics once I get home from work but the Axle has a female end on the transmission end. This was the shaft that connected to the axle and has the spring clip hole in it. The other side has a "C" clip on the end. Removing it also knocked off something that looks like a dust shield for the bearings.

Sorry for being vague, I'm still getting to know this car.

Oh yea, you're right sorry. Hmm, I'm not sure what it would be, hopefully someone else will chime in. Though I will say it's not likely you broke it, if it's broken it was probably already that way and you just helped it out.

I can't see the pics at work. However, it sounds like you just pulled the axle stub out of the transmission. You just need to get the stub out of the axle, make sure the c clip is still good and reinstall it back in the transmission. Make sure to not damage the oil seal when reinstalling. If it has been damaged, replace it.
