Most random thing ive ever seen

Post by Justins91ss »

On my way back up to seattle from las vegas last night, put gas in the car and turned it on the speedomotor/odomotor both randomly stopped working? Any thoughts/reasons as to why? Thx in advance

I'm guessing bad/disconnected speedometer cable. Maybe something came apart during your trip.

Well if you own a 1st generation legacy, then the speedometer and odometer is ran by a mechanical cable. If you pop the gauge cluster out you will know what I am talking about. It is possible that it might have gotten loose and popped out. If it did pop out, just line things up, and you can snap it back in (you will hear the snap). Then before you reassemble your interior MAKE SURE that it is working so you do not have to take it all apart if it doesn't. You can also diagnose your CEL with the on-board diagnostic wires and see what your car is having problems with and fix that too.

Unless the gauge cluster has been removed before I doubt it popped off. It is very hard to snap on and doesn't come off very easily either. What probably happened is some part of the cable or the piece that inserts into the transmission snapped. The check engine light is coming on because you're driving the car without the speed sensor hooked up (it can't read speed without the speedo cable turning in the gauge cluster). I did that 2 weeks ago and it caused all kinds of problems and the check engine light was flashing. Hooked my speedo cable up and all was fine again.

You likely need a new one of these.

It screws into the transmission. and is pretty easy to replace.
