window tint recomendations?

Hello all...
Thinking about getting my windows tinted at some point. Problem is, I'm also hoping to replace my confiscated valentine 1 radar detector (damn canadians!). Anyways, the window tint with metal in it interferes with the reception of the valentine, for both radar and laser. So I am wondering if there are any quality tints that don't have metal in them.

You can get tints that are dyed, however I'd probably not recommend them, as they can turn purple after a couple years.

The metal tint isn't going to affect things too much with the radar detector. You usually don't get zapped from behind to often....or at least that's what I've found.

I'll second Josh's recommendation. As long as you're not going to tint the front windshield, you should be alright.

3M now makes an extruded window film. The color comes from carbon (as in tires) and 3M says it will not fade out or turn color (purple). It's a neutral black color, not bluish or greenish like some other tints. It doesn't keep out as much heat as the metalized films, though. But because there is no metal in the film, there should be no problems with AM radio reception and probably radar and laser, too.

Oh, the film goes by the code "CS" meaning "color-stable," CS-50, CS-35, CS-20, and CS-5. The numbers stand for how much visible light that particular film will let through. So, if you put on the CS-5, that film will allow only 5% (actual testing is 7%) of the light to come through the glass. Vermont law stipulates NO film on the glass of the driver's door or the front passenger's door. But it does allow you to go as dark as you want on the rear door windows or the back glass. The 5% film is also known as "limo tint."

One more thing, if a 3M dealer wants to put on their "Panther" series window film on your car, you may want to keep in mind that it is not a color-stable film.
