Fuel lose, enginge surge

Post by philliebertano »

I have a 93 subaru legacy wagon that has 124000 miles, when we bought the car the transmission was fried we got a new one installed and things shift fine, it seems like there is a problem with the fuel system. The car goes through gas a lot quicker than it should about 15mpg on average. Also when the car is low on gas, the car almost dies and then surges and accerates real quickly like its not getting a proper flow of gas to the engine. Also when driving, when i step on the gas it takes a few seconds for the engine to catch up and engage. I changed the fuel and air filter to see if that would make any difference. It helped but the same things keeps happening just on a little lower degree. I was just wondering if this is a common thing with this type of car and how would I know it is a fuel system problem and not a tranny, engine or clutch problem (its an automatic, so I doubt its a clutch issue)? What other minor maintence could i do to give me a indication of what type of problem it is?

Thanks for alll the help, this is a great website its good to see other people appreciate older subarus

Welcome to the BBS.

You should be getting better mileage than that. Is the check engine light on by any chance? Even if it's not, you may want to try and see if there are any codes stored in the ECU. That may help determine what issues the car may be experiencing. I've got instructions on my site on how to pull the codes.

Also, is the POWER light flashing @ start-up? If so, you still have tranny issues. This will have codes stored - read 'em here thanks to Josh: http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/trans.html

I'm also wondering if your fuel pump is going bad...you could do a pressure test, which is probably described on here somewhere.

Do you have an exhaust leak anywhere close to the manifold? I had a corolla once that did the same thing and it was due to an exhaust leak on the manifold. No back pressure.
