Fuel Pump and Tank Help

Post by Brady »

So I bought another 91 SS and the kid I got it from said he he was getting rid of it because it had rust in the fuel tank.

So I just started in on it, I first noticed that the pump wasn't even working, I pulled it and tested the power to the harness. My test light said I had power to three of the wires. When the pump was hooked up it didn't even make a noise.

After pulling the pump I noticed a fair amount of the nasty iron color on the pump and in the tank.

So I came to the conclusion the pump needs replaced, and the tank needs cleaned out before I continue. Which leads me to my first question: what's the best way to clean the tank and rid the rust, I Googled it of course and I got everything from using coke, vinegar, and expensive coatings.

My second question is: I called up the local auto parts store and they quoted a price for around $89 for a regular pump. I also looked at the Walbro 255 and for $10 more I could purchase it. Is it worth it?

This brings me to my Final question, If I were to get the Walbro do I have to purchase an adapter kit for the Walbro pump for my 91SS and if so what kind of adapter kit?

Any help would be great!

the installation adapter kit part number is 400-791 which is the same as the newer impreza's. Most vendor will state if the pump comes with a kit or not.

Make sure you get the GSS 341.

As for cleaning the tank, I would suggest draining the tank and then trying to use a mirror to look inside and see if there's a lot of rust or if there's just a light dust coating, which is normal. Your 91 should have drain holes on the bottom back of the tank.

Yeah I drained the tank, there seemed to be more rust then average, this ss sat for 8 years or so. When I pulled the pump there was a lot of rust on the apparatus that holds the actual pump.
