Horn Relocation/Potential Supertone installation

Post by originalcyn »

I went looking for a relocation thread for the horn, because i remember there being one, but i couldn't find it. Does anyone know the link for relocating the horn behind the grille?

Also, this question is aimed more at josh and jamal, but when you installed your supertones did you have to install the relay? or is it possible to just take the old horns off and connect the wires from them to the supertones. I know that josh has four horns technically, so i guess any information about that would be handy.
I went looking for a supertones installation guide on nasioc, but the 3 or 4 i checked linked to another legacy site that was down, or the thread was gone.

Thanks everyone!

For the 90-91 MY legacies with stock grill, I do not feel there is enough room to fit the horns behind it. I had the horns originally installed in the stock location using the stock wiring for a while, and it worked fine. However they were not as loud as when I wired them up using a separate relay.

What I would suggest is using the supplied relay and tap into the stock horns for the relay's trigger. Wire the 12v supply to the battery with a fuse in-line, and then wire up the horns using that supplied relay. This way you keep the stock horns and get two more.

Are you familar with how a relay works and what the different pins do? If not, I'd suggest checking out this info on my site, www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/tip.html#relay

I mounted my horns to the a/c condensor bolts, on the left headlight the back of the tab the grille goes into needs alittle bit of filing so the horn doesn't rest on it but that could be only in my case because theres some front end damage on my car. The horns are circled in red and the tab thing is circled in yellow. Hope this helps. Image

Mine are crammed in behind the stock grille and actually do not sound right because they don't get the vibration they need.

As for wiring: you can use the stock connectors fine, but by going with the relay, you get more sound( I would go this route.)

You could opt to mount them in the lower opening to get the front facing sound, and by using the relay, would overcome any difference in mounting them low.

Thank you guys! This should all be useful. I can't quite go the route you did Danny, I think my AC condenser is still there, but yours looks rad.

Josh, i haven't installed anything to serious before. I did my head unit and speakers/subs, but i've yet to do anything relay wise, so i'm sure that diagram will be quite the boon.

Are the supertones deeper than the stock horns? I was thinking of simply moving my stock horn to see what it would look like and how i'd have to run cable. But i guess if the supertones are deeper, it won't be a good estimate.

The supertones are slightly deeper and larger diameter, so they don't exactly fit in the stock location that well. You can shoe horn them in, but there are better places IMO.

My condenser is still in the car, just bent a little. All it takes to mount the horns where I did is a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, ratchet, a few feet of extra wire, something to cut the wires, and(in my case) electrial tape but others might opt for wire nuts or soldering. The process is pretty simple, 1 remove stock horns with the 12mm, 2 cut the horn plugs off of the harness, 3 add about a foot to one plug and about two to the other and attach to the horn plugs and harness, 4 using the 10mm remove the condenser bolts that are just below the headlight bolts and use the condenser bolts to mount the horns, 5 connect the plugs to the horns, and 6 push the horn button to test the relocation. Its not as hard as it seems, it took me like half an hour max.
