wiring harness / electrical problems?

Long story short (or ill try) my son found some coilovers and dropped his 96 legacy gt wagon (auto trans) as far as he could and in the process his drivers side tire rubbed through half of his wiring harness and his car died. we got it home, unhooked the battery, took off the fender to assess the damage. none of the wires were actually broke but 12 of them had the coating rubbed off and were melted together. i seperated them and one by one wraped them with heat shrink and repaired the damage, or so i thought... the key is still stuck in the ignition and wont turn back far enough to come out and there is nothing when i turn the key. i did a quick visual of the fuse box and didnt see anything burned out. where should i start? what should i check first and next? thanks for the help!!

The key won't come out if the gear selector is not in park. The starter won't turn if it's not in park or nuetral.

If it is in park and the car doesn't realize this, it could be a sensor/wire/selonoid or such.

thanks for the info. but now i have to ask where i might find the this selonoid or sensor? i dont have much experience with auto trans.. and how do i tell if its fried? thanks!

There is a button, or should be a button under the steering column you can push with a screwdriver or similar to get the key out. Same thing for the automatic trans. There should be a flap you can flip over and stick a screwdriver in to move the gear selector back to park. This should allow you to get the key out assuming the rest of the wiring is ok.

Have you checked the slow blow fuses in the engine bay and fusible link? Does any other electrical components still work ok?
