replacing my oil pump, few questions

Post by zagarus »

I'm going to replace my oil pump soon and I just had a few questions.

1) What is the best way to compress the timing belt tension adjuster so I can use it again (it is only three months old, don't feel like getting a new one)

2)Do I really have to remove the waterpump like the service manual says?

3) What is the best kind of sealant to use to mate the pump to the block?

If anyone has any other pointers that would be much appreciated

Thanks!

1. Use a c-clamp and go REALLY SLOWLY! line up the holes with the inner piston, and stick a tiny screwdriver or allen wrench through to hold it down.

2. Don't think you need to remove it. I was able to replace my oil pump with the water pump installed.

3. I used Ultra Black RTV, just a little bit is enough, make sure you don't put too much or it could seep inside the oil pump when you tighten the bolts back on, and a clogged oil pump is bad, mkay? Also, you have a new crank seal for the new pump, and a new rubber o-ring that goes under the oil pump, right?

yep ordered the necessary seals as well. Even got camshaft seals, might as well do those if this engine is to last for a while until I go EJ20 :D

Thanks for the heads up on the tension adjuster. I was going to use a vice but I read it should be done upright.

I've always used a vice. Don't see a problem with it. The tensioner is mounted sideways on the engine.

A vice or c-clamp will work. As mentioned, go very slowly.

As for the sealant, the proper sealant to use is Ultra Grey.

You don't need to remove the water pump to replace the oil pump.
