Need some assistance with starting.

Post by Tim bray »

I have a 94 Legacy Subaru which started intermittently. Now it will not start at all. Replaced ignition switch and the actuator switch, and it still doesn't start. The #2 and the #4 relay have no power. I hot wired #4 to the battery and the car started, but I still do not know what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas?

there should be a relay, under the dashboard tucked way up above the ecu. It's really hard to get to it with the dash in, but very possible.

After checking all the parts stores I have a5 to 7 day wait for the relay. Is this relay used anywhere else that I can go to the salvage yard and get one. I have a 17 year old driving a 3/4 ton dodge to school and it scares me to death.

All the first gen Legacies, 90-94 would have this same relay. I'm not sure if the newer Subaru ignition relays would have the same pin orientation for the relay, but if you've got a junkyard you can snoop around, you may find something.

ok the relay is the brown connection next to the green one way under the dash on the driver side, but how do you get it to release. I've spent two hrs trying and have worn a permanent groove in my thumb.

There's going to be a clip that will release it. I've never had to deal with it, so maybe someone that has can show you a picture or give you a little more help.

Between the weather here in South Dakota and being away for work I haven't had a chance to work on it but I am off until Tuesday starting tomorrow so I will tackle it then.

According to this diagram, you should have power at pins 2 & 6 of the ignition relay while cranking. I know you mentioned 2 & 4 above, but did you check 2 & 6.

If you don't have power at pin 2, then the ECU is not sending a signal out to trigger the relay.
