Has anyone swapped steering wheels with an STi?

Post by boostjunkie »

I have access to an STi v3 steering wheel and I wanted to put it on my 91 turbo. Does anyone know whether this is a direct swap? There's no airbag on either car.

Thanks!!

it will work. If theres one place just about anything will work, its steering wheels. In the unlikely event that its too big, small, washers or a dremel will fix you up good. Just be sure to use a lock washer if you do that.

I just put it into my 92 turbo without any problem, just like the stock one with nice feeling.
Go for it and you will love it!

stupid question: how do i get that stupid cover off of the steering wheel? I got the side screws, and stripped that center screw under the wheel real good. Do i need to take that center screw out? My allignment is good, but the steering wheel is crooked. Thanks

I had a cheap shop do my alignment once and it came out aligned "straight" but with the steering wheel crooked. After driving the car hard around a few corners, I decided that it was wrong. The car was just too twitchy and responded to left- and right-hand turns differently.

A proper alignment should leave your steering wheel straight. The steering rack needs to be centered when the car's going straight; otherwise it becomes weird when turning. On this car, toe is adjustable on both sides, and so you should be able to put the steering wheel straight and then adjust both front wheels' tie rods to get them both pointed correctly.

Some cars aren't like this... My friend's VW Jetta TDI is not meant to have the driver's side tie rod adjusted. You're supposed to keep the driver's side rod fixed and adjust the passenger side rod. I have no idea why.

So unless your steering wheel got removed once and installed back incorrectly, I strongly recommend having your car aligned correctly, with a four-wheel electronic alignment.
