The dealership has recently confirmed that the tranny in the '91 turbo I bought is fubared. After considering the cost of getting it repaired I began to consider swapping a manual tranny into the car. Has anyone done this who can give me some tips or insight?
I'm thinking of dropping a '00-'01 2.5RS 5-spd with the rear diff (4.11 LSD) or a '02 and up 5-spd with the rear diff (4.11 LSD). So the short list of needed parts so far is:
tranny
rear diff
pedal assembly
hydraulic clutch assembly
Am I missing anything? Any better ideas?

Dave (DLC) has done this as have a few others here. They'll be able to answer your questions much better than I, although I too have been considering this swap for a looooong time. Money's the biggest problem for me though:(
2.5RS's or any other NA car is going to have a push style clutch. Subaru doesn't use these on their more powerful turbo engines, for these they use the pull-type. Something to consider. WRX trannies should be plentiful. and shorter gearing to boot.
DLC has done it and he gives a full write-up on www.legacycentral.org , just look around, you'll find links to the instructions and parts needed for the swap.
Nate S on this board also swapped a 5MT into his turbo wagon. He started a shop, and I think it's at www.ss-ms.com ...He doesn't have any writeup's I don't think, but you could always email him...
If and when you do Opie, I wanna come down for a ride

Very good write-up! Hmmmm, now to find a good, cheap WRX tranny & rear diff
I'll see what other goodies I can source for the swap at the U-Pull-It yard this Friday! I already need a P/S pump & an oil plan! See if I can find a manual Impreza or Legacy to cannabalize while I'm there.
