Starter issues

Post by TBFK »

So this morning I went to start my car to warm it up before I came to work. Well when I went to start it, it just clicked like it was dead. So I swapped batteries with my girlfriends Imprezza, and it did the same thing. I tried it about 15 times before it started. I then drove to work, turned ot off, and tried starting it again. Same thing happened. Do these car's have starter solenoids, or do I just need to replace the starter?

I've honestly heard lightly smacking it with a hammer can get it to work. I'll probably be giving it a shot on my dads '92 explore thats doing almost the same thing. I have seen videos where the hammer makes the car start, from older domestics to an Eagle Talon.

Yeah, hitting the starter can get you through until you change the contacts on the starter. Or find a cheap used starter, you'll need to take the starter out to change to contacts anyway. You might be able to find a used starter here for real cheap.

I'll try and find you the link and write up to site I ordered the contacts from.

I smacked it with my ball peen and it seems to work now. I've started it at least ten times since I smacked it, and it hasn't done it again. So hopefully it's fixed for a while.

You may have a dead spot on it. It will only do it when the starter happens to stop on that spot, which will take a hammer or a bunch of starting attempts to free up. Had mine going for over a year and only needed to hit it a couple times.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

I never knew that starters have dead spots. I've learned a lot from BBS and really appreciate all the help i've gotten from Legacy Central! Thanks guys!

More than likely it's starter solenoid contacts. They're relatively easy to replace. The hammer trick will work for a while, but you'll probably have the problem again.
