Ej25 AC removal?

Post by asotwavb »

Well my daily driver, a *stock* 1998 Legacy GT, sedan 5 speed with a EJ25 in it has started making a loud whining sound whenever the engine is running. Sounds as if i have a supercharger under the hood.

99% Sure its comming from the failed AC compressor, and since i do not use AC anyways, how would i go about removing this? Put a dummy pully in place, or use a shorter belt? Would the dealer have a belt to fit this motor without AC?

Thanks in advance BBS, i love you folks!

My power steering pump makes a noise like that due to always being low. If you do take the ac out, theres one belt that goes to the compresser that you can take off. I took the ac out of my car cause I don't use it and there was no charge in the system. If you're gonna take it out you should have the system discharged first but you can do it at home, its just not good for the environment. In the cheap mods thread theres some info about ac removal.

Thanks for the info, im actually a certified vehicle HVAC tech, and evacuated the system last year. I wasnt near the vehicle to check it out, but ill try to tackle this tommarow morning!

Yeah I'd suggest checking whether it's actually the AC. From the ones I've seen, they tend to knock vs. whine. The p-steering pump and alternator tend to make more of a whining noise.

You can pull the belt off the PS & alternator and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you just need to figure out which one is the culprit. You can usually spin them by hand and see if there's any added resistance.
