ej22 missfire please help!!

Post by scotty1419 »

Hi everyone, I heard this is a good subaru site with some really smart subaru guys in here and thats exactly what I need. I have a 98 LGT running a 95 ej22 engine. I paid a subaru mechanic who has done plenty of these swaps to do it for me. he did it and the car ran awesome for 8 months. I have tried plugs wires coil pack timing knock sensor, everything obvious. I swapped the entire intake with a known good intake, w fuel rails and injectors. drained fuel tank put fresh fuel in. compression is right on in all 4 cylinders.

I got these codesP0183 - Fuel temperature sensor P0341 - camshaft sensor P0403 - EGR Valve P1100 Mass air flow , but i hear that with the engine swap the codes probably arent good. however i put on a brand new MAF and cam sensor. My EGR valve is unplugged and brazed shut. The guy who put the engine in did it, i have no clue why. the car is definetly running rich plugs 1 2 and 4 are fouling completely black. ive put like 4 sets in the car. If anyone has any ideas/suggestions i would really appreciate it. I made a video of what its doing ill post the links. Thank you
Scott

Welcome to the BBS.

Do you know of the codes you are getting now have always been there since the swap?

From the video, it almost sounds like one cylinder may not be firing at all. Have you tried pulling each spark plug wire one at a time to see if the car idle's any differently? Based upon what you described with the plugs, it sounds like cylinder 3 may be dead, and the others are over fueling to compensate.

Have you done a compression test to see if the engine is making good compression?

Thank you for replying, should i pull the spark plug wires from the coil or off of the plugs themselves? And yes i have had compression test done twice. cylinders are all 145 psi.

It doesn't really matter which one you pull the plugs from. If you pull them from the coil, you may have a little bit of arcing if you do it slowly, so pulling from the spark plug is usually easier.

Well you've got some sort of fueling issue. I would check for a vacuum/intake leak. Usually that cause lean running though.

Another thought....you may want to try replacing the coolant temp sensor. If its off a little bit it could be causing you to run rich.

Does the car run any better/worse during startup/warm up?

I would also suggest checking the timing belt. Mine was 3 teeth off on one cam when I got it and it ran like crap, idled really rough and gave me a whole 15 mpg lol!
