timing belt cover fitment.

Post by Redlined »

death, taxes, blah blah blah.

Given recent and near future lifestyle changes due to health issues the thought of selling Angel has come up. With that in mind I've started working on projects that i have sidelined. One of which is finishing up after doing the timing gear set up. So timing covers, A.C. pully, belts, etc.

So I get the alt belt off, pull the main pully, center cover fits like a glove, drivere side takes a little fanageling but slides into place. the passenger side just wont slide into place, either the top or the bottom of the inside lip refuses to sit flush, played with it for quite a while before getting frustrated and walking away.

Is there a secret to getting these things on? I don't recall having this issue with my 90 NA.

Help! Thanks in advance!
Dave

Are you sure you have the correct covers on the correct side. ie, do you have the left side cover on the right side, etc?

They should fit right on without any issues.

I will have to double check, the drivers side took a bit of fenagling to get in but seemed to fit correctly.

checked the covers. I have the right ones in place. didnt work on it more, tightened the alternator belt and main pully, then went to the local parts shop to find out if the alternator is under warranty, aof course the shop wont honor the waranty unless I can provide the original receipt with the alternators serial#. God bless America.

ok so here we go, everything you see here are stock unmodified components.

here you can see, the middle section of the timing chain cover fits snuggle against the block. no gaps or misalinment.

Image

Here is the edge of the middle section, Ive added black lines to show the edge of the midsection and back section, note the tab on the block, lined with blue.

Image

Here is the passenger side timing cover. top and botom can be determined by the "Body lines" on the bottom of the timing cover

Image

If you notice, the timing cover has a tab on the lip that fits against the rear timing cover. this tab interferes with the tab on the block in pic #2. SOMETHING is wrong. HELP!

Dismantled the nose again, fit the centerpiece loose, fitted the end pieces (passenger side still didnt want to go on smooth but its on there now) Now im having problems fitting the bolts for the center piece, but the end caps are bolted on so not terribly concerned. Get everything back together and now the alternator belt squeels, tightened the adjustment all the way and the belt still squeels... thinking its time for a new belt anyways, just disconcerting that it happened after I reinstalled the belt.

Did you get the timing belt covers figured out or are you still having issues?
