re timing EJ22...any advice or walk-throughs?

Post by hendy »

Can anyone guide me through the simplest possible way to re-time the engine. Tensioner pulley snapped bolt off and through deconstruction everything is probably off. A timing light is not readily accessible either. The cam gears should line up marks on gears with notches in cover for tdc? Any suggestions on advancing the timing a few degrees or stick to stock?

It's really quite simple and really doesn't have anything to do with TDC or any of that. All you need to do is align the marks on the cams pullies with the marks on the covers, and align the mark on the BACK of the crank gear with the mark on the oil pump. It's a common mistake to align the mark to the arrow on the front of the crank gear.

You can also count belt teeth to make sure you get it correct. Here's the factory manual which has all the info.

Yeah, count the teeth on the belt. Hopefully, the new belt has markings that are spot on. The Mitsuboshi belt I Just put on a few weeks ago, had line marks on it that perfectly aligned with the correct number of belt teeth.

Get the line on the crank sprocket line up with the notch in the case, and each cam wheel marking (not the arrow) to point up at 12'o'clock, should hopefully match up with the notches in the plastic cam rear covers).
