FrankenMotor Question

Post by Ethansdad1 »

Hey everybody I have a question for you. Before you say research it I have and nobody directly says what to use. I want to do the 2.5 in my 92 legacy but I dont know what year 2.5 to get.
Also what headgasket do you use? the 2.2 or the 2.5?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

When it comes to the EJ series engines, the blocks and heads are like legos. You can literally put a 1996 ej25d Outback to a 2011 ej257 STI short block in there. The headgaskets need to be for an EJ25.

They changed thicknesses over the years (the HG's, not the block height), so you can use that to tune how high compression you get.

"But what static compression will I get with X block and Y heads and Z head gaskets?" That's where you need to do the math and research. Assume other peoples numbers are suspect, and work out the calculations yourself to verify.

All this talk of Frankenmotors lately makes me miss mine. I need to rebuild the short block. Fresh heads and a tired block don't mix well.
