Timing Belt Replacement

Post by Chasbags »

Can anyone help me? I have a '94 Legacy 2.0 Turbo(UK) and need to find information regarding timing belt replacement as the water pump seized, throwing the belt of the pulleys :( I think I might have got away without bent valves as there is still compression when the crank is turned, but I won't reallly know until I put it all back together. I have a Chiltons manual but shows no DOHC engine!! I just need to find how to line it all up! Is there anyone who might know any detailed resource on the web? I really want to get it going again, it's just to good to scrap!

Ooooohhhh... ouch. Chasbags, I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but as far as I know, DOHC Subaru engines are valve-valve interference. It's possible that you could have gotten away with it if you still have compression, but if so, consider yourself very lucky! I personally would go ahead and pull the heads off and give them a good look-over.

Ask morgie on this board about EJ20 stuff, he is in the process of putting EJ20 heads on an EJ22T for a really cool project 8), and he might be able to help you with timing marks.

I'm inclined to say that they're very similar to the EJ25 DOHC engines we got in the 96 Outback and such, which we have diagrams for in our Haynes manuals, but I'm not 100% sure about that...

Good luck and welcome to the board!

North Ursalia has a page on his web site with timing belt scans from a 2002 WRX factory manual:

It should be very similar if not identical to your car.

Good luck.

I had my local garage (not a dealer) do the timing belt on my UK turbo as it looked hugely complicated in the Haynes manual (available on the amazon.com site as it's US-only).

The major cost in doing this replacement (assuming no engine damage) is the cost of the belt itself which is about £120 over here from a dealer, and you can't get them anywhere else to my knowledge. It's only about two hours of book-time to do the replacement so labour isn't too bad.

As with the other posts I'd be really surprised if there wasn't any damage as there's not a lot of space in there...

Thanks for all the replies chaps - Its good to get some support. Thing is, I don't really fancy taking the heads off as there is not much room to do that (Unless the engine comes out  ) I think will take the chance and try it with a new belt. I know there's always a chance it might be OK.....however small! I will let you know how I get on..

heads will come of relatively easy, its putting them back on where it sucks. Maybe its just me but I had a lot more trouble getting em back on than off. If you have the money, take the heads off and check.
